Health Services Research
Designed to help professionals in health services critically
evaluate research in their respective fields. The course
will cover basic principles of research design and statistical
analysis and will survey health services research
approaches, including epidemiology, program evaluation, case
studies, organizational analysis, ethnography,
and sociology/health psychology. Prerequisite: two core courses.
HAD 4105
Health Information Management Systems Data and Infrastructure
Analysis and case study of HIMS networks; internets; telephony;
data interchange, data access, and data management.
Prerequisite:
HAD 4665 plus the four core components.
HAD 4115
Health Information Management Systems Applications
Case study of the foundation and incorporation of the critical
HIMS applications in the modern health care
delivery enterprise. Specific applications will be explored with
an emphasis placed on the practice of Managed
Care. Prerequisite:
HIM 4105.
HAD 4125
Computer-Based Patient Record (CPR)
An in-depth analysis of the Institute of Medicine's (IOM)
standards, requirements, attributes, and benefits
of the CPR and its use in the health care delivery enterprise. The
use of data warehouses, data repositories,
and integration technology will be explored relevant to CPR
development along with the various
issues and strategies for implementation. Prerequisite:
HIM 4115.
HAD 4145
Health Information Systems Resource Management
Project management; system security and confidentiality; resource
allocation; prioritization; operational fundamentals
and system controls; staffing strategies; and social, ethical, and
legal issues, concepts and techniques.
Prerequisite:
HIM 4125.
HAD 4155
Health Care and the Internet
Examination of the specific roles that internet technology plays
in health care. Observations and trends that
play a significant role in improving the quality of health care
delivery will be discussed. Various components
such as intranets, extranets, knowledge management and web design
concepts will be explored.
HAD 4165
IT Project Management
This course examines the various strategies for IT planning with a
heavy emphasis on: business alignment with
IT, assessment and prioritization of large capital lT projects,
implementation steps and issues, projected
benefits realization, organizing the IS function, and other
leadership strategies.
HAD 4605
Health Administration
An introduction to the principles of administration within health
and human services organizations and the
basic concepts of leadership and organizational theories relevant
to effective administration of health care
institutions. Organizations are viewed as open systems requiring
constant interactions with the environment.
HAD 4625
Psychosocial Aspects of Chronic Illness and Disability
A survey of psychological, social, and behavioral theories and
principles as they relate to the experiences of
chronic illness and disability. The course will emphasize the
impact of these experiences on the patient in
terms of motivation and life satisfaction, restructuring social
support systems, and changes in psychosocial/developmental
needs. Attention will be given to the changing role of the health
professional as
direct care provider, manager, consultant, and advocate. Prerequisite:
all five core courses.
HAD 4635
Health Care Strategic Planning and Marketing
An introductory course that examines the foundations, principles,
and basic applications of this field. Internal
and external forces that shape marketing policies and planning are
explored. Topics include the development
of marketing strategies and programs, as well as marketing mix
variables and general health care
planning. Prerequisite:
all five core courses and the four administrative component
requirements.
HAD 4645
Health Care Organization
An overview of the organization, structure, and financing of the
health care delivery system in the United States.
The various elements comprising the system will be presented,
along with an exploration of the basic concepts and measures of
health, disease, needs, quality, and utilization. Issues in health
care resourcing,
institutions, and system organization will be examined.
HAD 4655
Health Care Law
An examination of the major legal issues encountered in the health
care field by administrators and practitioners.
Among the topics to be included are principles of liability, legal
aspects of medical ethics, and
legislative and regulatory factors in health care delivery. Prerequisite:
all five core courses.
HAD 4665
Health Care Informatics
A survey of the current use of information technology in the
clinical and management practice for the health care
delivery enterprise. Students will become familiar with the basic
terminology, strategies, and utilization
of HIMS as a key component in the delivery of patient care. Prerequisite:
three core courses.
HAD 4675
Accounting for Health Care Organizations
An introduction to basic accounting techniques used in the health
care industry. Prerequisite: all five core courses.
HAD 4685
Financial Management of Health Care Organizations
An introduction to the basic theories and practices of financial
management as they relate to health care organizations.
Course includes budgeting principles. Prerequisite:
all five core courses and HAD 4675.
HAD 4715
Hospital Administration
In depth study of hospital operations with emphasis on not-for
profit/nonprofit settings; focus on departmental
operations, role of administration, the board, and medical staff.
Includes legal and reform trends
affecting hospitals, financial mechanisms, budgeting, labor
relations and corporate restructuring. Prerequisite:
all five core courses and the four administrative component
requirements.
HAD 4725
Managing Employee Relations in the Health care Setting
This course serves as an introduction to and exploration of effective management techniques used to manage employee relation in today's hospital and health system settings. It incorporates the manager and the HR practitioner's perspective and entails an overview of various policies, program, and practices used by management to ensure the dignity, respect, and fair treatment of employees. Prerequisite: all five core courses.
HAD 4745
Ethics of Health Care
A critical examination of the central ethical issues in the health
care field. Issues to be treated include euthanasia,
life-prolonging medical technologies, abortion, screening for
genetic defects, experimentation
and informed consent, distribution of scarce medical resources,
the right to health care, and
its implications for the health care delivery system. Necessary
background in moral philosophy will be
provided. Prerequisite:
HAD 4645.
HAD 4765
Managed Health Care
This course is an introduction to managed care including current
and evolving models, terminology, and differences
among insurers and payor types. The course will focus on the use
of financial incentives to restrain
health care costs and the role of utilization review, peer review and
provider reimbursement.
HAD 4775 International Health Care Systems
This course is an introduction to health systems with a country-to-country comparison in terms of general organization funding, key trends, and strengths and weaknesses of each model. The focus will be learning from other countries, benchmarking, and lessons learned for the U.S. healthcare system. Prerequisite: three core courses.
HAD 4805
Health Policy
The formulation and analysis of health policy at federal, state,
local, and corporate levels. This course presents
an overview of the legislative, regulatory, and political
processes and their effect on the health care
system. Provides a conceptual and analytic framework for policy
analysis regarding policy formulation,
adoption, implementation, operation, evaluation, and termination.
Pragmatic application of policy
analysis tools is included. Prerequisite: all five core courses
and two of the administrative component requirements.
HAD 5025
Fieldwork in Health Administration
Individually arranged fieldwork in an approved health care
facility. Student must have permission of the program
director before registering. The experience is tailored to
individual student goals. Prerequisite: all five
core courses and the four administrative component requirements,
plus Departmental permission prior to registration
(Spring/Fall only).
HAD 6025
Integrative Capstone Course in Health Services
An integrative course in which students examine special topics of
particular interest in the volatile and challenging
health and human services environment. Subject competencies
obtained in previous coursework
are applied to analyze/synthesize the designated topics and
propose policy solutions or program
development initiatives. This should be the final course in the
curriculum. Prerequisite: all five core
courses and four administrative components. Offered in Spring
Semester only.
HAD 4955
Directed Research in Health Services
An opportunity to conduct a research project under the supervision
of a faculty member.
Note: students may
register for a directed research study only after (a) submitting a
research proposal to the program director; (b) arranging
for a faculty member to serve as mentor; and (c) receiving
explicit approval from the department chair.
