Degree Requirements


To earn the M.S. degree, students must satisfactorily complete twelve courses (36 credits). Any course substitutions must be pre-approved by the Director. Two graduate courses (six credits) may be transferred with the approval of the Director as long as they meet program and University standards. Official transcripts are to be submitted prior to matriculation. As described above, the program offers six different areas of concentration:

Each contains the same six required courses: five core and one capstone. The concentration areas contain more specific courses.

M.S. IN HEALTH EDUCATION—COMMUNITY HEALTH

The requirements for the M.S. in Health Education include five core courses, one research courses, four courses from the Health Studies module, and two courses from the Sociology/Education/Administration module. Core courses should be completed early in the program. The requirements include the following 12 courses:

SCHOOL NURSE CERTIFICATION OUTSIDE OF THE MS PROGRAM

Pennsylvania School Nurse certification can be earned outside of the MS Program. Applicants must submit:

  • completed application with non-refundable application fee;
  • official copies of undergraduate transcripts;
  • copy of RN license.

The following three graduate courses are required:

  • EDU 4015 American Education
    or
    EDU 4545 Law and Education
  • EDU 4035 Psychology of Teaching
  • EDU 4805 Special Learners

*Two of these courses (EDU 4015 and EDU 4035) require enrollment in a one-credit certification lab.

In addition, the student must show a total of 150 hours of fieldwork as a school nurse. These hours can be completed independently, and can be fulfilled after acceptance, while taking coursework. Students must register for the practicum experience with the Program Director. 

Upon completion of coursework, copies of the RN license, Saint Joseph's transcript showing 11 credits of required coursework (above) and a letter verifying 150 fieldwork hours are forwarded to Harrisburg along with the Pennsylvania Department of Education Application for Certification. A copy of the certification application can be obtained from the Program Director. Students are required to meet the Pennsylvania certification standards in effect at the time of application. If state requirements change, the University must reserve the right to modify this course of study, even if in midyear.
