Faithful to the Ignatian heritage of service and committed to the education of leaders acting for the improvement of the social order, Saint Joseph's University continues today to encourage innovative education programs aimed at improving the quality of life both in the local and global communities. Community Service Programs complement the academic life of the students at Saint Joseph's University. All the service initiatives emphasize student leadership, community building and structured time for processing and reflecting on the service experience.

Developmental, Learning, and/or Physical Disabilities
ARC of Philadelphia: Be a companion to adults with disabilities. Make a difference in your life and the lives of others! Various volunteer opportunities available and hours are flexible. Transportation provided.

Inglis House: Assist with recreational activities and build relationships with wheelchair-bound residents. Flexible hours.

Special Olympics: Serve as a coach and mentor to a Special Olympics Sports team for children with disabilities. Transportation provided. Background check required.

Health Care
Lankenau Hospital: Various volunteer opportunities available based on completed application and orientation at Lankenau.

St. Catherine Laboure Medical Clinic provides health care to the medically uninsured. Volunteers assist with clerical work, sorting medications, and taking blood pressures/weights. Transportation or SEPTA tokens provided. Hours flexible, Mon-Thurs 9-3. NOTE: Pre-Med students only.

HIV/AIDS Outreach
Francis House: Serve at a ministry for those living with HIV/AIDS in Camden, NJ. Tuesdays 10-12:30, transportation provided

Hunger and Homelessness
Bethesda Project: Build relationships with those who are currently or recently homeless. Mondays 3:30-6:30, transportation provided.

Outreach: Conduct street outreach and build relationships with homeless residents of Philadelphia, Thursday evenings from 5:30 - 8:30pm. Transportation provided.

Project Home: Serve a meal and spend time with residents at St. Columba's or Kairos House (transitional housing for those recently homeless) Any day, Mon-Thurs, 4:00-6:30 PM. Transportation provided.

Soup Kitchen at Our Mother Sorrows Parish: volunteers assist with serving lunch to impoverished men and women: Monday through Wednesday 11:15 am – 12:50pm. Transportation provided.

Soup Kitchen at the Life Center of Eastern Delaware County: volunteers assist with serving an evening meal to impoverished men and women. Any day, Mon-Thurs, 6:30-8:00 PM. Transportation provided.

Senior Citizens
Adopt-A-Pop: A program at the Loyola Infirmary that involves regularly visiting a retired Jesuit any day of the week, at a mutually arranged time, for a half an hour to an hour.

Simpson House: Assist residents of a retirement community with recreational and social activities. Morning and afternoon hours are available. Transportation provided.

Welcoming Immigrants/Tutoring
Welcome Center (Sisters of Saint Joseph): volunteers assist immigrants in basic computer classes, adult basic education, citizenship preparation, practical life skills. Transportation provided. Mondays and Thursday 5:45-8:45 pm.

Youth - Education and Tutoring
Bluford Elementary: Public school located 5 min. from SJU. Students volunteer as a teacher’s aide and help students in reading, science, and other classroom assistance. Any day, Monday thru Friday, 8:30am – 3pm, flexible hours. Background check required.

Congreso: Tutor and mentor at-risk youth from the Latino community. After school/evening hours to be determined. Background check required.

Dream Camp Afterschool Program at Cornerstone Christian Academy in Southwest Philadelphia. As a mentor you will be matched with a small group of Philadelphia elementary or middle school students and provide homework help and literacy enrichment. Interview/resume required. Monday or Wednesday from 2:30 to 6:00 PM. Background check required.

GESU: An afterschool program which involves tutoring and leading activities for inner-city children from the Gesu School, ages preschool to 7th grade, any afternoon Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 6:00 PM. Transportation provided.

Gompers:Volunteer at Samuel Gompers elementary school (located next to SJU). Volunteers serve as a classroom aide to the teachers, offering one-on-one assistance when needed OR tutor at one of their after school programs. Any day, Monday thru Friday, flexible hours. Background check required.

Holy Name Elementary: An after school reading and tutoring program working with children in Camden, NJ. Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 5:30 PM. Transportation provided.

Methodist Services: An after school program involving tutoring and recreational activities with grammar school-age children any afternoon Monday through Thursday from 3:45-6:00 PM. Background check required.

Summerbridge of Greater Philadelphia: As a volunteer, you will teach one class of 8-12 7th and 8th grade students, assist them in completing school assignments and projects, and support the overall program during special trips. The program is located at Episcopal Academy, across the street from SJU. Volunteer Tuesday OR Thursday from 3:30 to 6:00 PM. Background check required.

Campus Ministry offers numerous opportunities to serve the community around Saint Joseph's University. Transportation is provided for most service opportunities, and a 1 to 3 hour per week commitment is required. A criminal background check and child abuse clearance is required for some placements.
