Note Taking Tips

Each student has his or her best strategies for effective note-taking. However, remember to vary note-taking strategies with disciplines and instructors lecture speeds and styles. Use active listening and be selective about what you write into your notes.

BEFORE the lecture, read the assigned material. (Utilizing time management skills will ensure you have adequate time to complete all of your assignments). Being familiar with important points from your reading will allow you to quickly identify relevant information from the lecture.

REVIEW your SYLLABUS on a regular basis to see what topic is addressed in the reading and allow you to set your purpose for reading and listening during class.

DURING the lecture, watch and listen for cues from the instructor about important information. How does the professor organize the material? If information is not logical to you, try organizing the material according to headings. Gaps can be filled in after class, or by reviewing notes with a classmate. Don't hesitate to ask your professor for clarification about a point.

SELECTIVELY record information: Do NOT write down every word the instructor says. Develop a set of abbreviations and methods for identifying key concepts.

AFTER the class REVIEW YOUR NOTES within twenty-four hours.
