Seven Strategies to Minimize Stress and Achieve Success

Ones academic success is influenced by many factors other than IQ. Below are seven strategies to consider when creating a balanced life where you are successful and not stressed.

  • Establish a daily routine - This helps in managing time & setting priorities such as sleeping, eating, and studying.

  • Balance extra-curricular activities - This allows you to keep the BIG picture in perspective. One academic organization & one social club is optimal.

  • Participate in campus events - Take advantage of special lecture series, art exhibits, theater & music productions or rallies. These opportunities broaden your world view.

  • Set high but realistic goals for yourself - Know your strengths & interests. Work in a variety of ways which moves you closer to attaining this goal.

  • Be kind to yourself - Associate with people who support & encourage you.

Know what you want and find others who share similar goals. Now away from home, establishing caring friendships fills the void once occupied by your family.

  • Establish a mentor relationship - Faculty member, in your major, from whom you can seek advise in many areas. This relationship you will come to value long after your four years on campus have ended.

  • Keep an open mind - Allow yourself to know people different from yourself, and explore the area where your university is located. Your college experience and ability to succeed in life is contingent upon a hunger to learn, openness to new ideas and people, and willingness to admit mistakes and continue on.
