Welcome to NJSLC 2005
Welcome to the official NJSLC 2005 webpage! The SJU Conference Staff is made up of forty unique individuals and in our forty extremely unique college experiences, we have all discovered the same thing-that Saint Joseph's University is large enough to let you spread your wings, yet small enough not to lose you in the crowd. This is the same way in which we envision the NJSLC 2005 and with that in mind we have been working diligently to make this year's conference the most comprehensive, educational, and inspirational to date. As soon as you get to SJU, it feels like home: you can let your inhibitions go and be yourself, discoveryourself andimprove yourself. SJU is a place where you are more than a number, and everyone knows your name. It is with this vision that we are planning to make SJU your home away from home this summer. Take your time and look around, and send all questions our way. We hope this makes you excited because we cannot wait!
About the Conference
NJSLC stands for the National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference. Since its premier the conference has been bringing together student leaders from around the nation in order to improve our ability to serve our fellow students. The following mission statement was adopted in 1997:
"Student organization leaders collaborating to develop ideas, explore student issues, and build stronger leadership skills to better serve their colleges and universities in the Jesuit tradition."
In August of 1997, at Regis University in Denver, CO, students from a number of the 28 Jesuit colleges and their affiliate universities gathered in an effort to improve the leadership at each school. The original purpose of the conference was to improve the student governments at each university. Now, though, the conference includes community service leaders, orientation staffs, resident housing staff members, peer educators, club leaders, and even administrators.
The conference continues to grow around this, its mission statement, student organization leaders collaborating to develop ideas, explore student issues, and build stronger leadership skills to better serve their colleges and universities in the Jesuit tradition.
The conference is built around the Jesuit principles of education and spirituality. During its seven years of existence, speakers from Karen Hargrove to Baltimore Mayor Martin O’Malley have given keynote speeches for the event, and this year that tradition of great speakers will undoubtedly continue. Along with keynote speeches, breakout sessions have become a fixture of the conference as students from the various organizations and schools meet together to discuss everything they perceive as relevant to their school’s well being. Wonderful meals and memorable evening activities have also been a part of every NJSLC. The conference is growing, and as it grows, so does the enjoyment and learning of its participants.
Past conference hosts include: Regis University 1997, Xavier University 1998, John Carroll University 1999, Loyola College Maryland 2000, Gonzaga University 2001, Creighton University 2002, Canisius College 2003 and Loyola Marymount University 2004.
