Dear Members of the SJU Community,
I am delighted to announce that SJU has a new Mission Statement. This past Thursday afternoon the Board of Trustees passed a resolution in support of the Mission Statement. I want to thank all members of the Saint Joseph’s community who participated in the discernment of this Mission Statement. More than 800 of you participated in the survey about the Statement this past December and many of you were involved in the more than dozen “discernment groups” that began last summer.
I especially wish to thank the members of the Mission Statement Task Force led by Dr. Springs Steele and Karin Botto. The other members of the Task Force are: Megan Wood, Tim Swift, John McCall, Shawn Krahmer, Alex Iannucci, Marty Farrell, Ron Dufresne, Valerie Dudley, Susan Clampet-Lundquist, John Braverman, S.J., and Al Pastino.
Here then is our new Mission Statement:
As Philadelphia’s Jesuit Catholic University, Saint Joseph’s provides a rigorous student-centered education rooted in the liberal arts. We prepare students for personal excellence, professional success, and engaged citizenship. Striving to be an inclusive and diverse community that educates and cares for the whole person, we encourage and model lifelong commitment to critical thinking, ethical decision-making, social justice, and finding God in all things.
I hope you will join me in thanking the Task Force on its fine work. More importantly, I hope you will join me in embracing this Mission Statement as together we strive to provide the best possible Saint Joseph’s experience to our students.
C. Kevin Gillespie, S.J. ’72
