Internship Possibilities for Summer 2011

There are three summer internship possibilities for Summer 2012.

(1) Philadelphia Electrical and Technology Charter High School  APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL MARCH 26

We will be placing 3-4 students at PE & T Charter High School, located in Center City, Philadelphia.  Internss will be helping in a morning academic enrichment program for high school students and an afternoon enrichment program for middle school students.  They will be working in math and science classes.  Interns will be required to attend an orientation session before the program begins (details on the date are pending).  The program runs July 9th to August 16th and goes from 9:00am until 3:00pm, Monday through Thursday.  Interns will be required to meet an additional 2-3 times during the six weeks at SJU in the late afternoon or evening to discuss their experiences.

The stipend for the summer will be $400 per week for the 6 weeks.  Students who would like to live on campus will receive an additional stipend to cover this cost; however, housing will only be available until August 10th and other arrangements will need to be made for the final week.  (Do not let this deter you; we can find housing for you if needed.)  Students will also be eligible for free bus tokens if they plan to use public transportation to travel to and from the school.  There is no free parking near the school.

(3) Breakthrough Philadelphia  APPLICATIONS NO LONGER BEING ACCEPTED FOR THESE POSITIONS

Breakthrough Collaborative is a national non-profit that increases educational opportunity for high-potential, low-income middle school students and inspires outstanding college and high school students to pursue careers in education.  Consistently featured as a Top Ten Internship by the Princeton Review, Breakthrough's innovative Students Teaching Students model partners middle-school students with college and high school students who serve as teachers, role models and mentors, providing real-life examples that it's ‘cool to be smart'.

Breakthrough Philadelphia has three sites in the Philadelphia area including one at Saint Joseph's University.

Breakthrough is currently hiring for Summer 2012; the deadline for applying is February 27 although earlier is better.  Funds from the Noyce Internship program will be used to fund up to one math and one science position at any of the Philadelphia area sites. If you wish to apply for one of these internship positions you must go through the normal Breakthrough application process.  In addition, please submit the Internship Consent Form to Dr. Sandra Fillebrown by February 15.

The stipend for the summer will be $2700, paid in four installments.  Students who would like to live on campus will receive an additional stipend to cover this cost; however, campus housing is only available until August 10th.
