Asian Studies Program

China Program

terracottaIn May 2008 Saint Joseph’s University inaugurated its new China Program aimed at undergraduates interested in spending a month exploring China while earning credit for a regular Saint Joseph’s course taught by a Saint Joseph’s faculty member. Thirteen undergraduates visited Shanghai, Nanjing, Tiantai, Ningbo, Xi’an and Beijing. Dr. David Carpenter, director of the Asian Studies Program and Associate Professor of the History of Religions in the Theology Department, offered a course on Mahayana Buddhism and by Dr. Ann Green, Associate Professor in the Department of English, offered a course on writing.

This summer Dr. Jay Carter of the Department of History led a group of Saint Joseph's students to China in the second year of the program, visiting Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou, Xi'an and Beijing. Dr. Carter's course, "Modern China: Struggle and Survival," introduced the students to the social, political, and cultural history of China from 1840 to the present.

The 2010 China Summer Program will again take students to Shanghai, Nanjing, Xi'an and Beijing, and possibly a cruise through China's famous Three Gorges. Dr. David Carpenter of the Department of Theology will be offering a course on Chinese Buddhism (a version of THE 1931 designed for the China Program), Dr. Patrick Garrigan of the Department of Psychology will be offering PSY 1011, Introductory Psychology, and Dr. John Neiva of the Department of Management will be offering MGT 2441: International Management.

A limited number of scholarships are available to Asian Studies majors and minors for study in Asia. If you are an Asian Studies major or minor and would like to apply for a scholarship to cover a portion of the costs of the Summer China Program you can download an application here

The China Program is administered through the Center for International Programs. Look under "Study Tours" -> "Summer Programs" on the CIP web site.
