Research
The study of the developmental cycle of the bacterium, Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus. The bdellovibrios are obligate preditors of other Gram-negative bacteria, exhibiting a bi-phasic life cycle characterized by a free living attack phase and an intraperiplasmic growth phase.
Ongoing projects include:
- Isolation of mutants unable to grow predatiously by utilizing transposon insertion mutagenesis.
- Characterization of predation-deficient mutants.
- Isolation and cloning of predation-specific genes.
- DNA sequence analysis of predation-specific genes.
- Sequencing and annotating the genome of Bdellovibrio sp. Strain W (in collaboration with the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center).
