Procedure to Withdraw from a course
After the drop/add period, students may withdraw from a course. The student's transcript will reflect this with a "W." At this point in the semester, students may not add another course; they must make up this course either during the summer or as a sixth course. See the Associate Dean for permission for a sixth or summer course. The final date for withdrawal is Friday, November 6. The form must be signed by the student's advisor and then the Associate Dean. To download the form, click here.
Procedure for Pre-registration
Closed courses
Students may obtain permission from the department chair to be signed into a course for a variety of reasons, such as closed course, waiving a pre-requisite. Students should obtain the "authorization to override a course" form and meet with the appropriate department chair. At times, the permission of the particular course instructor and/or the dean is also required. To download the form, click here.
PLS Evening Courses
Students must obtain permission from the chair of the department in which the PLS course is offered. A dean's signature is NOT required. Juniors and seniors may take a maximum of 2 PLS courses per year. Sophomores are generally discouraged from taking PLS evening courses, although exceptions can be made at the discretion of the appropriate department chair. Freshmen may not take PLS evening courses. Day student enrollment in PLS courses is limited to 20% of the class; some day students who wish to take a specific PLS class may be unable to enroll if the 20% capacity has already been reached.
Intersession Courses
PLS offers courses for two weeks during Intersession between the New Year and the start of the Spring semester. These courses are open to day students with the following provisions:
- An intersession course may count as an elective for any student (with the exception of freshmen) with his or her advisor's signature.
- Intersession courses are open to all students (with the exception of day freshmen) , day or evening, for credit in the major only with the chair's signature.
- In order for an intersession course to count as a GER, it must specifically approved on an annual basis by the GER committee.
- To date, there have been no GER courses for day students submitted for approval for the Intersession. Accordingly, no intersession course may count for the GER for day students for Intersession 2010.
- Day students in the College of Arts and Sciences are normally restricted to four courses in PLS College for their undergraduate degree and first year students are normally not eligible for such courses.
- Under no circumstances is a dean's signature required.
- Restrictions on the percentage of day students in PLS courses do not apply to intersession courses.
If you have general questions about academic advising, please contact Donna Mallon, dmallon@sju.edu or x 1280 or visit the dean's office in 113 Barbelin.

Please note that most studio courses require an art fee in addition to normal tuition charges. Remember that during pre-registration, students and advisors can access such information by clicking on the CRN number for the course. Please direct any questions on this matter to the GER committee or to the department of Fine and Performing Arts.
