Art History
art history

Art History is an interdisciplinary field that encourages students to explore the many intersections between art and politics, religion, science, technology, history, theology, and philosophy, among other areas.  Through close analysis of works of art, architecture, and critical texts, students of art history develop a strong and wide-ranging cultural literacy.  Because of St. Joseph’s University’s proximity to Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, DC, students are able to see major works of art at such world-renowned institutions as the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation, which is walking distance from the university.  Committed to the university’s mission, this concentration encourages students to think critically and to develop and articulate their views through written and oral communication.  Art history prepares students for careers in museum and gallery work, teaching, and a wide range of other professions that require strong research, analytical, writing, and speaking skills.
