Department of Fine & Performing Arts

Why Fine & Performing Arts?

Through our curriculum and programs in the visual arts, music, and theatre, we address our two primary objectives: to help our students to discover their personal creative potential and to help them develop an awareness of lasting cultural traditions.

Discovering your Creative Potential

If you feel most alive when you are in a play or writing a song or making a photo or video, drawing or sculpting you know why many of our students major in the arts. With a combination of academic courses and creative courses you have a chance to explore the depth and the breadth of your talents in the arts.

Stealing or Learning from the Past

The 20th century musical giant Igor Stravinsky said that all artists borrow, but great artists steal. Some of our students study great artists, playwrights and composers of the past and present for the sheer joy of it. Many of our students do it to steal – to make a new work building on what has been done before.

But Can You Earn a Living in the Arts?

In addition to preparing for graduate and professional work in the arts, our majors have developed careers in a
wide range of art-related areas including advertising, commercial photography, concert and commercial music, gallery and museum curation, graphic/web design, opera, interior design, architecture, and teaching from the elementary to the college level.

And while developing the necessary skills to be successful in the field is central to the curriculum, the Fine and Performing Arts program is also intended to broaden the range of understanding of the arts for each major and minor – engendering students who use those skills in an expressive, creative, and thoughtful manner.
