Erica Novak, the program's first Latin major, says this about her experience:
Entering Saint Joseph’s University with an English major, I was well aware of my high school love for both English and Latin, but I didn’t think I could realistically pursue both. My first Latin classes, however, captivated me by offering an independent learning experience, rich exploration of the historical context of the texts, and the constant challenge to draw and support scholarly conclusions in my readings; it became clear that I could not stop taking Latin classes. Dr. Maria Marsilio came to my rescue with a plan to develop a Latin major for me around my English, Education, and Honors curricula with the goal of dual teaching certification in English and Latin. Her tireless efforts on my behalf gained approval for the major, and I was able to pursue my loves. Dr. Marsilio continued to challenge me as I prepared and presented a paper at a Classical Association of the Atlantic States conference, where I was able to network with other Classicists, and to guide me in finding a teaching position. Through nurturing mentorship, challenging readings, honors-level seminars, and fascinating real-life experiences, the SJU Classics Program and Dr. Marsilio taught me about ancient civilization; moreover, they taught me to challenge myself as a scholar, value the insights of peers, support my opinions logically, and to meet any goal through hard work and creative thinking. My study of the ancient world at Saint Joseph’s University truly allowed me to find my place in today’s world.
