Program Overview

The Writing Studies graduate program provides opportunities for writers of all kinds—from public relations writers to fiction writers. We bridge the gap between traditional literature-based master’s programs and creative writing programs with a wide variety of courses and prospects.

We offer courses in practical matters, like grant writing, as well as fiction writing, poetry writing, and creative nonfiction writing. We know that writers love to read, so we have incorporated the study of “Writing and Culture” into our program, offering courses that explore literature and culture from a writer’s perspective.

We encourage our students to publish and support the craft of writing in all of its forms. Small class sizes encourage you to both know your professor and your fellow students. Our community of writers is thriving!

Why choose Writing Studies?

All writing is creative. We believe that writers thrive by working in a community of active writers, and that journalists can benefit from conversations with screenwriters, and poets can learn from public relations specialists.

Our program is unique. The Saint Joseph’s University M.A. in Writing Studies bridges the gap between “creative” and “analytic” writing to provide a dynamic environment for writers of all kinds.

We appreciate all varieties of writing. Students in our program write short stories, poems, press releases, reflections on teaching, plays, adolescent literature, autobiography, biography, personal essays, grant proposals, and many other kinds of writing.
