(Banner title) "Undergraduate Research in Math & Natural Science" (can be two lines, could be positioned under the banner instead of on it, whatever looks best). (Text): "Welcome to the web page for undergraduate research opportunities in Mathematics and Natural Science. This site is meant to act as a clearing house of information for undergraduate students looking to engage in faculty-mentored research at Saint Joseph's University in the areas of Biology (hyperlink "biology" to www.sju.edu/biology), Chemistry (hyperlink Chemistry to "http://www.sju.edu/cas/chemistry/), Computer Science (hyperlink Computer Science to http://macs.sju.edu/), Environmental Science (Hyperlink Environmental Science to http://www.sju.edu/biology/environ.htm), Mathematics (hyperlink Mathematics to http://macs.sju.edu/) and Physics (hyperlink Physics to http://www.sju.edu/cas/physics/). Please use this web page as your starting point in exploring these opportunities. As you find areas of interest, you should then schedule a meeting with specific faculty members to discuss possible research projects. Undergraduate research opportunities are divided into two major areas: those that occur during the academic year and those that occur during the summer as part of the Saint Joseph's University Summer Scholars Program (hyperlink the words "Summer Scholars Program" to www.sju.edu/ssp). Faculty Research Areas: The faculty in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Division are engaged in research in a wide variety of areas. You can download an electronic version of the Divisional Research Book highlighting faculty who have recently mentored summer research students here (this will be linked to the pdf that the press is preparing and should be ready soon). You can also learn more about the faculty in different departments by visiting their web pages. These web pages are listed above in the first paragraph of this page. Academic Year Research Opportunities: Research for Academic Credit - Many students engage in faculty-mentored research for academic credit during their undergraduate career at Saint Joseph's University. This involves first identifying a faculty-mentor who is willing to work with you and has a project available. You can then, with their permission, register for research as a course for the next semester. This carries the expectation of ca. 9 hours of work per week. Research. See each department's web site for more information. Research as a Volunteer - Many faculty allow students to work as a volunteer in their research group. This allows interested students to try out research without formally taking a course. Work-Study Research Assistants - Students who are work-study eligible (eligible students will be contacted by the Office of Financial Assistance [hyperlink Office of Financial Assitance to http://www.sju.edu/finaid/] ). If you are work-study eligible, you can be employed as a research assistant for a faculty member. This may be somewhat different from research for credit or as a volunteer in that you may be required to do clerical work in addition to research activities, since the nature of this position is as an assistant. Summer Research Opportunities: Summer Scholars Program - The Summer Scholars Program is a competitive program that provides support for students to engage in full-time, faculty-mentored research over an eleven-week period. Students receive a stipend and the option of free, on-campus housing. For more information, see the Summer Scholars web site (hyperlink Summer Scholars to www.sju.edu/ssp) Barbelin Scholars Programs - The Barbelin Scholars Program provides highly-qualified students with one summer's funding for participation in the Summer Scholars Program as part of the scholarship package. For more information see the Barberlin Scholars web site (hyperlink Barbelin Scholars to www.sju.edu/ssp/pages/bl_scholars.html). If you have questions of would like more information about undergraduate research opportunities in Mathematics and the Natural Sciences at Saint Joseph's University, please contact Dr. Michael McCann, (hyperlink my name to a page with the same contact information as the summer scholrs contact information) Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences.
