All forms of financial aid can be applied to Saint Joseph's-APPROVED programs. This includes Saint Joseph's grants, loans, scholarships, and state and federal awards, such as Pell Grants and Guaranteed Student Loans. A financial aid package for a student participating on a Saint Joseph's Approved Program will be based on the specific costs of the program in which the student will be studying. The following expenses will be included when calculating a student's financial need: tuition and fees, room and board, books, airfare for round-trip ticket and miscellaneous expenses such as local transportation, police registration fees, immunizations and any health insurance required by the host country. Students may not use any of their financial aid towards a Non-Approved program.

SJU Study Abroad Grants
Saint Joseph's University offers several scholarships from roughly $500 to $3,000 for Saint Joseph's University students studying abroad on semester or year programs. To be eligible for consideration, you must be an SJU degree-seeking undergraduate student and complete the SJU Study Abroad application. Students who have not studied or traveled abroad in the past are strongly encouraged to apply. Awards are granted on the basis of merit, need, and the quality of the essay. Scholarships are for only one semester of study. Previous award winners are not eligible. Completed scholarship applications must be submitted in full to the Center for International Programs and received by March 15 for Fall programs and October 15 for Spring programs. All applications will be reviewed by a committee. All award decisions are final and may not be appealed. The Society of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick Irish Studies Fund

The Society of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick have generously donated monies to Saint Joseph's University to aid in the support of an SJU undergraduate student(s) who is accepted by SJU and the overseas university to study abroad in Ireland for a semester or year academic program. This award is made once a year. All students must apply prior to the academic year during which they plan to study abroad by the deadline indicated by CIP. Scholarship award amounts vary year to year, but are estimated to be a minimum of $1,000 designated for tuition only and are awarded on a need and merit basis. Preference shall be given to students who pursue courses in Irish Studies or the Humanities while in Ireland. The application deadline is April 1, 2011 for both Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 semesters. The Arthur R. Marsilio Memorial Scholarship for Study Abroad
The family of Dr. Arthur R. Marsilio has established this scholarship to honor the life of their beloved husband and father. The family has donated funds to Saint Joseph's University to support a Saint Joseph's University undergraduate student(s) who is accepted by SJU and the overseas university to a study abroad or study tour program in Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Spain, or Latin America. Students participating in semester-long or academic year study abroad programs will be given preference over those participating in study tours or summer programs. Since the donors hope that this scholarship will promote serious engagement with the languages and cultures of Italy, Greece, France, Germany, Spain, and Latin America preference for all scholarship awards will be given to majors and minors in the Classics, French, German, Italian, and Spanish Programs if they show both academic excellence and financial need. However, all SJU students who meet the application criteria are welcome to apply.
The scholarship award in the amount of $2,500 will be made annually on both a need and merit basis. The award may be given as one full award of $2,500 to one student or as two half awards of $1,250 to two students, at the discretion of the award selection committee and in consideration of the financial needs of the applicants. The scholarship recipient(s) will be selected by a committee of faculty in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures who teach in the languages and cultures of the country in which the students intend to study. The award selection committee may also include a representative(s) of the Center for International Programs.

OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIPS:
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000 this undergraduate study abroad scholarship program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). The Gilman Scholarship aims to diversify and expand participation in international study by supporting students who have been traditionally underrepresented in US study abroad and those with high financial need. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based undergraduate opportunities abroad worldwide. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. National Security Education Program (NSEP)**
NSEP was designed to provide U.S. undergraduates with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experience in countries and areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation. NSEP Scholarships can be applied to study abroad in all countries except those in Western Europe and Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Appropriate and integrated study of a foreign language is required for all study abroad proposals. Awards are for a minimum of one academic term, including a summer term of six (6) weeks or longer. Preference will be given to applicants pursuing study abroad for a full academic year. Please note that Boren Scholars are required to demonstrate their merit for an award of up to $20,000 in part by committing to work for the U.S. Government for at least 1 year.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
The Bridging Scholarship program awards scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan.
