Madrid is an exciting European capital city and this program offers students in a variety of majors the opportunity to live and study in this splendid city. The program is hosted by Saint Louis University's Madrid campus. Students may attend in the fall, spring, summer, or for the entire academic year.
Established in the late 1960s, St. Louis University's campus in Madrid is the oldest U.S. University in Spain and the first U.S.-based University to have its own free-standing campus in Europe. As the Madrid campus is fully dependent on the home campus in St. Louis, Missouri, the same academic goals and values - with a distinctive international dimension - apply there as in St. Louis. The undergraduate enrollment is around 600: 40% from the U.S., 25% from Spain, and 35% from other countries.
The Madrid campus is located in an ideal setting. It is in the university quadrant of Madrid, located on the northwest side of the city, with open views of the mountains to the north and west. On a winter's day, you can see the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra de Guadarrama from the library. The campus has superb metro (subway) and bus access.
ACADEMICS
SLU Madrid campus offers a complete range of undergraduate careers in the arts, business, communication, engineering, and sciences; as well as master's degrees in Spanish and English. SLU Madrid also offers students a full range of extracurricular activities. The program in Madrid is best suited for students interested in Communication, Earth Science, English, Economics, Management, Spanish, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology; though courses in other subjects are available as well. The majority of courses are offered in English. Please visit SLU Madrid's website to view complete course listing.
The semester schedule is very similar to a semester at SJU. Classes are offered 5 days a week from 9:00a.m. to 8:00 p.m. All Saint Joseph's University students are expected to register for 5 classes (of at least 3 credits each).
HOUSING
Over 90% of study abroad students choose to live with a Spanish host family or in the University-run residences, space permitting. If you prefer, however, to find your own housing, SLU Madrid can offer you tips on how to do so and can reserve a room for you at a nearby pension, where you can stay while you look. We recommend that students reside with host families. This enables students to experience Spanish society to the fullest, and is particularly important in improving Spanish language skills. Learn more about the host-family experience.

Saint Louis University arranges for optional air travel between the United States and Madrid. St. Joseph's students enrolled in the program will receive further detailed information regarding this option.
