Summer Study Abroad Policy

We realize that not every student will be able to spend an entire semester or year abroad.  Students also have the option of participating in a short-term study abroad program through SJU or another university.  For more information about the upcoming SJU summer programs to Rome, Greece, China and Chile, please click here.  If you are more interested in a non-SJU summer program to another location, you should review the Non-SJU Summer Study Abroad Procedures found below.  Please note that these vary slightly from semester abroad procedures.

There is no list of "approved" programs for summer.  Instead, students who are not interested in one of the four SJU summer programs can choose any other accredited summer study abroad program, as long as they complete the Non-SJU Summer Study Abroad Application and the Non-SJU Summer Study Abroad Credit Approval Form.  To begin researching possible program options, we suggest www.studyabroad.com or www.iiepassport.org.  You can also make an appointment with the Study Abroad Advisor if you have any questions.

Procedures for Saint Joseph's Students Planning Summer Study Abroad on a Non-SJU Program

Students interested in studying abroad during the summer and transferring the courses back to Saint Joseph's University must follow the procedures below. The deadline for students to complete an Approval to Transfer Summer Study Abroad Credit Form (hereafter referred to as Approval Form) is March 15 of the current calendar year. Students are encouraged to apply early, and should secure approval to study abroad before making any financial commitments to a program provider.

1. Meet with your academic advisor to discuss your plans to study abroad and how the courses you plan to complete while abroad will fit into your curriculum.

2. Obtain, from the study abroad program you are considering, a brochure and course descriptions. Before you apply to the program, make an appointment with an advisor in the Center for International Programs. Students are required to obtain written approval from the Center for International Programs office on the Approval Form in order to participate in the program chosen.

3. If taking a Business course abroad, the appropriate Department Chair should approve the course. If taking a course within the College of Arts and Sciences, the appropriate Academic Associate Dean must approve it. They should also indicate the equivalency on the Approval Form and sign off on each course.

4. Take the Approval Form to the Associate Dean of your major. The Associate Dean or Associate Dean's designee for your school/college will approve or deny your request to transfer summer study abroad credits after reviewing your academic record and the completed Approval Form.

5. Students are required to bring a copy of the completed Approval Form to the Center for International Programs. Students should also be sure to keep a copy of the form for their own records.

Students who apply to study abroad programs must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with Saint Joseph's University and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.  Students will be asked to sign a waiver within the Summer Application allowing the Center for International Programs to check with the associate Dean's Office regarding both academic and disciplinary standing.  Any current or pending discipline issue will be taken into account in evaluating a student's application to study abroad.

Credit is granted for courses completed in overseas programs only when the student has secured in advance written permission from the appropriate Associate Dean.  Credits earned through the summer abroad program (with the exception of the SJU Rome, Greece, China and Chile programs) will be considered transfer credits and the grades earned will not be posted on the SJU transcript.

The student is responsible for submitting appropriate application materials and payments to the program he/she decides to apply into.  Payments should not be made until the student has received an approval notice from the Center for International Programs.

Upon completion of the program, the student must request the sponsoring/host institution send an official transcript to the Center for International Programs.
