ROME, ITALY

See what it really means to "Do as the Romans do..." Immerse yourself in an experience that may change your life by participating in the SJU Summer in Rome Program. Earn SJU credits while experiencing Italian culture.

Program Dates: July 5-August 3, 2010

Location

Saint Joseph's program takes place at the University of St. Thomas Bernardi Campus, a residential villa in the heart of the modern Prati zone near central Rome and Vatican City. The building has a small computer lab, a chapel, and a dining room for student breakfasts. Professors from Saint Joseph's University teach classes on-site. For additional photos of the Bernardi Campus, please visit: http://www.stthomas.edu/rome/

Housing

All students live in the main building where classes are held in spacious, shared double or triple rooms. There are two residential floors, one for men and one for women, and the residential floors are single-sex (women are not allowed on the men's floor and vice versa). All television lounges on the residential floors are co-ed. Common areas are air-conditioned while student rooms are cooled by ceiling fans. Token laundry machines are available in the building.

Meals

A basic breakfast is served daily and is included in the Program Fee. Dinner is also served to students in the dining room two week nights per week. A shared refrigerator and cabinet space is available for storing water & snacks, though students are not permitted full kitchen access for cooking meals.

Group Travel & Excursions

CIP has arranged for a round-trip group flight from Newark, NJ. Upon arrival students take part in an orientation program. Later, a one day excursion and a weekend group-trip to Florence will be planned. A coordinator from St. Joe 's leads the group through all these logistics, from departure to return, and the cost is included in the Program Fee. Additional fees may be due on arrival for other site visits specific to the individual courses.

Courses

Professors will use "Rome as a classroom" and many learning experiences take place while visiting historic landmarks and museums. Each professor determines his or her individual class schedule, the hours and days the class will meet, and how many meetings take place at the Bernardi campus or at other sites throughout the city. Everyone remains flexible with their schedules, but students should expect to have roughly 15 hours of class time each week and to spend additional time reading, doing research or practicing language skills. Students may apply for one or two of the three courses offered:

MGT 2441 - International Management - Dr. Stephen Porth

POL 2041 - Democracy and Legal Theory - Dr. Francis Graham Lee

CLA 2031- Ancient Rome: Art & Architecture - Dr. Harry Neilson

GREECE

Program Dates: TBD
Cost: TBD + SJU Summer Tuition

The SJU Greece Summer Program is held on the charming island of Syros, off the beaten tourist path where students get a glimpse into true Greek life. Students live and study during the month long program close to the sea in a residential villa with kitchen facilities. Students should be prepared for living very basically in the Villa, almost as if "camping," since some times plumbing and electricity service can become over-taxed. Group excursions to Athens,Santorini and Crete (one week) are planned for Summer 2010. Students may enroll in only one course and each course has a limited number of spaces available. .

The class offerings for Summer 2010 are:
