Biographical Sketch
Raquel Kennedy Bergen, Associate Professor of Sociology, has been teaching at Saint Joseph 's University since 1994. She grew up in Alexandria Virginia , received her BS from Saint Joseph 's University in 1989 and received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania . Her research is in the field of violence against women with a particular emphasis on rape in intimate partnerships. She is the author of Wife Rape: Understanding the Response of Survivors and Service Providers. This book examines the experiences of 40 women who raped by their partners and the response of rape crisis counselors and battered women's advocates to the problem of wife rape. She is the editor of the book Issues in Intimate Violence and was the editor of a special issue of Violence Against Women (5:9) on the subject of wife rape. She has authored numerous articles on intimate violence and wrote an article for VawNet on wife rape.
Most recently, with Claire Renzetti and Jeffrey Edelson, she co-edited the Sourcebook on Violence Against Women.
Her current research is on men who have sexually abused their partners. Using a sample of men in a batterer's treatment program, she is examining their use of sexual violence against their partners. Her other major project is on women's experiences of sexual violence during pregnancy. This study includes surveys of women to assess their experiences of sexual and physical violence during pregnancy and in-depth interviews with women who were raped by their partners during pregnancy.
She frequently provides workshops on rape in intimate partnerships to rape crisis centers, battered women's shelters and law enforcement organizations around the country. She is active in her work with women who have been victims of violence as a battered women's advocate and rape crisis counselor.
