Comprehensive Full-Time Undergraduate Curriculum Review

Working Group on Curriculum Architecture

The following documents are available:
The working group report dated February 2005
Minutes from the open discussions of the report, held spring 2005
Response to faculty poll, held fall 2005
Faculty feedback on architecture poll (November 2005)

The task of this working group is to consider specific curricular architectures that could be implemented at Saint Joseph’s that would help to solve problems identified in the Interim Report, such as lack of flexibility and tension between majors and the GER. The group would especially consider the question of whether the best approach is an entirely new architecture, e.g., a matrix model or a modification of the existing architecture.

Specific tasks:

  • Formulate a recommendation as to what the basic components of the curriculum should be and what proportion of the curriculum each should encompass [i.e., how much of the total curriculum should be allocated to each component (i.e., the GER and the major?)] Should there be minimums or maximums set?
  • Consider whether degree requirements should be defined in terms of courses, credits or in some other way?
  • Make recommendations as to whether course completion should be the sole way in which a curriculum requirement is satisfied or whether there should be multiple ways including, e.g., demonstration of competency through testing, portfolios, etc.
  • Consider and describe any factors that might pose limitations on curriculum design at Saint Joseph’s University, e.g., number and size of classrooms, scheduling flexibility, faculty workload issues, etc.

Composition of Working Group (9 members):

One faculty member from each division
Two student representatives – one from CA&S and one from HSB
The Registrar or his designate
Two members from the Comprehensive Curriculum Review Steering Committee
