Comprehensive Full-Time Undergraduate Curriculum Review

Working Group on Concentrations

The Working Group on Concentrations will consider the purpose of having concentrations (majors, minors, certificate programs) in the curriculum. The Working Group should consider the various forms a concentration of study can take and how these should be structured.

The current draft of the Concentrations report is available as a pdf file or as a MSWord document.

The poll questions and responses are available but not in a very nice format, sorry.

Composition of Working Group (8 members):

One faculty member from each division
Two students representatives– one from CA&S; one from HSB
Two members from the Comprehensive Curriculum Revision Steering Committee

Specific Tasks:

  • Formulate a statement as to whether there should be concentrations in the curriculum. The Working Group should consider all forms of concentration in the curriculum, including majors, minors, or certificates of study.
  • Define the purposes and desired outcomes for majors, minors, and/or certificate programs, and how they will be achieved.
  • Consider the structure of a concentration. How can courses be properly sequenced? What is the inter-relationship between and among courses within the concentration? Is there a mechanism within the concentration to identify gaps and redundancies in coverage?
  • Consider whether there should be a limit on the number of courses which a major can require.
  • Describe how a concentration (major, minor, and/or certificate program) can address the issues of student engagement, rigor in the curriculum, and pedagogy.
