The Working Group on Mission, Diversity and Globalization will examine how the curriculum contributes to the University’s mission to foster in students “moral discernment reflecting Christian values, and a transforming commitment to social justice . . . within an inclusive environment marked by trust and enriched by a diversity of ideas, cultures, and religious commitments” (SJU, 2003d, p. 9).

Specific Tasks:

  1. Define how the curriculum can best serve our mission in ways that uphold the Jesuit and Catholic identity of the University.
  2. Identify ways to recapture the high standards of academic excellence and rigor that are the hallmarks of Jesuit higher education.
  3. Identify ways to educate all students in the University’s mission and the rich traditions of Ignatian spirituality.
  4. Identify ways to increase our students’ curricular exposure to diverse cultures. How are mission, diversity and globalization interrelated with each other, with the GER, and with the major?
  5. Consider to what extent can the Faith-Justice program, service learning courses, international programs, immersion experiences and outreach efforts can be used to incorporate diversity and social justices into the required curriculum
  6. Examine the interplay between the formal and parallel curricula, and consider how to promote academic rigor and high levels of student engagement in a curriculum that incorporates both.

Composition of Working Group (10 members):
One faculty member from each division
One member of the Jesuit Community
One student representative
One representative from Faith-Justice
One representative from the Diversity Commission
Two members from the Comprehensive Curriculum Review Steering Committee
