Welcome to the Erivan K. Haub School of Business. The new academic year has arrived, and no doubt your energy and enthusiasm are building as you plan for the coming year. Our staff and faculty look forward to working together to help you attain your academic and personal goals.
The growth and change on Saint Joseph’s Main and Maguire campus, will contribute to an exciting new year for our community. The renovation of the Hagan Arena will surely set the stage not only for our athletic teams, but it will be a dynamic gathering point for Hawk fans. The Kinney Center for Autism Education and Support will add value to Saint Joseph’s mission as a practical and supportive resource for educators, professionals, and families affected by autism spectrum disorder. The new Saint Joseph’s record label, 1851 Records will certainly bring a new kind of charisma to our campus, as well as expand opportunities for students interested in exploring the music industry and entertainment marketing. Finally, the renovated Campion Student Center, will contribute to a positive social experience for students throughout the year. I am pleased to introduce the following new members of our staff and faculty at HSB:
Janée Burkhalter, Assistant Professor of Marketing
Neal Hooker, McNutt Chair of Food Marketing
James Kelley, Assistant Professor of Marketing
Steve Miller, Assistant Professor of Finance (Risk Management and Insurance)
Patrick Saparito, Assistant Professor of Management
The beginning of the school year is an excellent time to reflect on past accomplishments as a backdrop to set future goals for the HSB. Some of our achievements include:
For the fifth time in the last eight years, the Part-time MBA program was ranked among the Top 23 in the nation by U.S News & World Report and the No. 1 business school in Philadelphia.
Recognition as one of the nation’s outstanding graduate business schools in The Princeton Review’s student survey-driven guidebook, The Best 296 Business Schools.
Overall ranking of No. 57 out of 1500 by Business Week’s Best Undergraduate Business Schools and No. 18 by recruiters who hire our students. Saint Joseph's is one of only three Philadelphia schools included in the top 60.
The HSB was awarded The Beta Gamma Sigma Outstanding Chapter Award- the fifth consecutive year that SJU has been named an Outstanding Chapter. Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society recognizing academic achievements of students who are enrolled in college business and management programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International.
US News and World Report recognized our Marketing Undergraduate programs in Food Marketing, Pharmaceutical Marketing, Sport and Entertainment Marketing and Marketing Communications among the best 21 specialty programs in the United States for 2010.
We are particularly proud of our students’ successes as they reflect hard work and dedication. Some of the student highlights include:
A team of finance students, won first place in the Philadelphia Investment Research Challenge sponsored by the Chartered Financial Analysts in the city of Philadelphia and came in first place. Participating Schools included Bryn Mawr College, Drexel University, Rutgers University (Camden), Temple University, University of Pennsylvania, Villanova University, and Widener University. The competition consisted of the following components: Analysis of a public company, mentoring by a professional research analyst, writing a research report, and a presentation of research to a high-profile panel of experts from top financial institutions.
“Philadelphia Cup”- A group of graduate finance students participated in the 2009 Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) Case Competition, the which is the region’s only leading business case competition focused entirely on the financial investment/corporate development marketplace, and placed a close second to The Wharton School of Business.
Portfolio Team Award Competition - The student managed portfolio won the top portfolio team award in 2008 for the core style of management at the undergraduate level at the Eighth Annual Global Student Investment Forum, co-sponsored by University of Dayton and the United Nations Global Impact>
AMA International Collegiate Conference - The Saint Joseph’s chapter of the American Marketing Association, for a second year in a row, won 4 awards at the 2008 30th conference. In 2009 the chapter was voted as the Top 16 Chapters out of 145 Outstanding Chapters.
The Accounting Department received a grant from PricewaterhouseCoopers in the amount of $50,000. This award will enable the development of a practice case set for use in the Financial Accounting Information Systems I, II, and III courses. This case will integrate International Financial Reporting Standards into an SAP based case set that will follow the students through the three courses, thus linking their knowledge of financial accounting and reporting.
As you begin planning for college, consider the many opportunities and resources that are here to help ensure your success and enhance your college experience. Explore service learning and study abroad. Take advantage of our library support and research tools. In addition, take advantage of what the HSB has to offer:
An Advising Center, that collaborates with faculty advisors to help students benefit fully from the college experience. The William Leahy Center for Advising works closely with first and second-year students and is an excellent resource for general advising questions and issues related to the transition to college. The faculty advisor’s role focuses primarily on mentoring and academic/career planning
The Cooperative Education Program (Co-op) provides professional development and internship opportunities for students, and helps them with the transition to life after SJU.
Hands on career services. New this year, the Career Development Center will have a presence in Mandeville (Room 206A) on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am - 5 pm; walk-in hours for students are from 1 pm – 4 pm. Assistant Director, Melissa McClory will be available to assist with resumes and cover letters and to answer your career questions. Keep in mind that approximately 50% of our students enter the HSB as “undeclared” business majors, and those who enter as a declared major often change their major, sometimes more than once. Therefore, use the first few semesters as opportunities to research and explore the majors offered at SJU. The HSB Advising Center, the Career Development Center, and faculty are here to support you in this exploration and to help you discover your passion.
Support in funding. A centralized Scholarship database, hosted on SJUcareers houses scholarships, fellowships and other similar funding opportunities for which SJU students are eligible. Check www.sju.edu/careers and enter your sju career login to access the database.
The MySJU Portal will feature a “New Hawks 2008” tab that is dedicated to the Class of 2013. This convenient and comprehensive site will feature academic information, a list of mailings you can expect to receive in the coming weeks, a to-do list for incoming students, and links to other essential resources. After logging onto MySJU, this site is accessible under the New Hawks 2009 tab. Please visit this portal frequently and take advantage of this great resource.
Below are a few HSB features which are sure to enrich your educational experience.
AACSB Accreditation
The Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University is accredited by AACSB, the International Association for Management Education. In fact, both the business program and the accounting program are accredited. AACSB is higher education’s most prestigious and rigorous accrediting body in business, stressing academic excellence and a commitment to continuous improvement. Less than 10% of the business schools in the United States and several selected schools internationally have earned this accreditation in business and accounting. In Pennsylvania, we are one of only four business schools to have its accounting program and business program AACSB accredited. To achieve accreditation, the business and accounting programs must continuously satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to curriculum, faculty resources, admissions, degree requirements, library and computer facilities, financial resources, and the intellectual climate that are all mission-linked. This accreditation puts the Haub School of Business in an elite category of the best business schools throughout the world. It allows us to attract and retain highly qualified faculty who can create dynamic learning environments for our talented students and to connect with numerous business and community partners in this rapidly changing global economy.
The Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics
The Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics was founded to be an intellectual resource for the application of business ethics in both academic and business contexts. The Center, a result of a private alumni gift of $1 million, integrates ethics into the Haub School’s teaching and research agendas. It carries out this mission through various programs including a speaker series, faculty workshops, a biennial conference, student retreats, immersion experiences, and an annual national survey. The Pedro Arrupe Center is also the sole sponsor of Saint Joseph’s student chapter of Net Impact, an international organization that promotes using the power of business to make a positive social, environmental, and economic impact. For more information about the Pedro Arrupe Center, please visit the website at http://www.sju.edu/arrupe/.
Wall Street Trading Room
The Haub School is pleased to have one of the few Wall Street Trading Rooms in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Trading Room contains a Ticker Board, Picture Wall and Data Wall, and 35 computers with 15” dual flat screens. Two 40” panels display live data, and ticker and cable feeds. Comprehensive financial data and analytics are provided through subscriptions to Reuters StockVal, Thomson’s Baseline, Tradestation and Morningstar’s Principia. Real-Time ticker data from the major exchanges (NYSE, NASDAQ) is provided through Rise Financial Wire. A Bloomberg Professional terminal is also available, providing access to the global standards for business information. The Wall Street Trading Room is used by students taking courses in Student Managed Investments, Investments, Portfolio Analysis, Financial Statement Analysis, and Information Systems. A student portfolio, “The Hawk Fund” is managed by the students in Student Managed Investments and volunteers using the research capabilities in the Trading Room. The Hawk Fund portfolio rate of return is published monthly at http://www.sju.edu/hsb/wstr/pages/funds.html. The objective of this program is to empower students and faculty with the necessary tools to benefit from the campus network, the internet, and course-specific software. Use of the laptop will be an integral part of the business school curriculum, keeping HSB students current with today’s business trends and proficient in the utilization of cutting edge technology.
