Course Work (Tracks)

Department of Finance

Students who choose to major in Finance can select from one of four tracks in the field of finance (Insurance and Risk Management, Financial Planning, Investments, and General/Managerial Finance).  Each student regardless of track will take three required courses in finance to give them general knowledge of the broad field of finance.  A discussion of these required courses is at the end of this document.  The following is a discussion of the courses associated with the two tracks in the broad industry known as financial services (Insurance and Risk Management and Financial Planning).

Courses required of all Finance Majors regardless of track

The required courses for all majors regardless of track are markets and institutions, intro to investments, and intermediate finance.  The following are course descriptions for the courses required regardless of track. 

FIN 2341          Markets and Institutions                                                                   3 credits

This course covers the role and workings of financial markets; money and capital markets, mortgage markets, bond markets, stock markets, foreign exchange markets, and derivatives markets.  The course also examines the management of assets and liabilities by financial institutions including commercial banks, insurance companies, mutual funds, and investment banks.

FIN 2351          Intro to Investments                                                                          3 credits

This course will cover the investment process and features of securities including mutual funds, real estate, and tax advantaged investments.  Sources of information, market transactions, return and risk concepts, indexes are also covered.  Valuation of common stocks and bonds and dimensions of fundamental and technical analysis are discussed.

FIN 2401          Intermediate Finance                                                                         3 credits

This course focuses on the financial management of fixed assets and long-term capital management.  Topics include capital budgeting, risk, CAPM, capital structure, cost of capital, dividend policy, valuation, bankruptcy, and reorganization.

Actuarial Science is a degree offered trhough the College of Arts and Sciences in co-operation with Haub Business School, it a math concentrated arts & sciences degree rather than a business degree.
