The beginning of the school year is an excellent time to reflect on past accomplishments and set goals for the coming academic year. This has been an exciting year for the HSB. Some of our achievements include:
-
Recognition as one of the nation’s outstanding business schools in The Princeton Review’s recent student survey-driven guidebook, The Best 143 Business Schools.
-
The HSB was awarded The Beta Gamma Sigma 2006 and 2007 Silver Chapter Award. Beta Gamma Sigma is an international honor society recognizing academic achievements of students who are enrolled in college business and management programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International.
-
US News and World Report ranked HSB Graduate Business Programs #1 in Philadelphia and among the top 25 in the United States.
These achievements reflect the stellar work and commitment of our faculty, staff, and students. We challenge you to make the most of your time as a student in the HSB and continue this tradition of excellence.
As you begin planning for college, consider the many opportunities and resources that are here to help ensure your success and enhance your college experience. Explore service learning and study abroad experiences. Take advantage of our library support and research tools. Participate in SJU Reads, by reading the SJU summer book, The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy. In addition, the HSB offers:
-
An Advising Center that collaborates with faculty advisors to help students benefit fully from the college experience. The HSB Advising Center staff works closely with first- and second-year students and is an excellent resource for general advising questions and issues related to the transition to college. The faculty advisor’s role focuses primarily on mentoring and academic/career planning.
-
A Professional Practice Center (PPC) that provides professional development opportunities for students and helps them with the transition to life after SJU. PPC coordinates the HSB four-year Cooperative Education Program and facilitates all internship opportunities.
-
Updated academic programs that feature specialized tracks within a major, allowing a student to target his/her curriculum to a particular area of interest.
Keep in mind that approximately 50% of our students enter the HSB as “undeclared” business majors, and those who enter as a declared major often change their major (sometimes more than once). During the first few semesters of college you will have many opportunities to research and explore the majors offered at SJU. The HSB Advising Center, Career Development Center, and faculty are here to support you in this exploration and help you to find your passion. It is not uncommon for a student to change majors during their academic career. As a matter-of-fact, the process to select or change your major is quite simple. A quick visit to the HSB Advising Center is your first step.
I want to update you on a new resource that SJU is introducing for incoming students. This summer, the MySJU Portal will feature a First-Year Experience (FYE) site that is dedicated to the Class of 2011. This convenient and comprehensive site will feature academic information, a list of mailings you can expect to receive in the coming weeks, a to-do list for incoming students, answers to frequently asked questions, and links to other essential resources. After logging into MySJU, this site is accessible under the FYE tab. Please visit this portal frequently and take advantage of this great resource.
Following are some additional highlights of the HSB, which are sure to enrich your educational experience.
AACSB Accreditation
The Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph's University is accredited by AACSB-The International Association for Management Education. In fact, both the business program and the accounting program are accredited. AACSB is higher education's most prestigious and rigorous accrediting body in business, stressing academic excellence and a commitment to continuous improvement. Less than 10% of the business schools in the United States and several selected schools internationally have earned this accreditation in business and accounting. In Pennsylvania, for instance, we are one of only four business schools to have its accounting program and business program AACSB accredited.
To achieve accreditation, the business and accounting programs must continuously satisfy the expectations of a wide range of quality standards relating to curriculum, faculty resources, admissions, degree requirements, library and computer facilities, financial resources, and intellectual climate that all are mission-linked. This accreditation puts the Haub School of Business in an elite category of the best business schools throughout the world. It allows us to attract and retain highly qualified faculty who can create dynamic learning environments for the talented students who attend the Haub School of Business. This accreditation also allows us to connect with numerous business and community partners to further enhance business education in this rapidly changing global economy
PedroArrupe Center for Business Ethics
The Pedro Arrupe Center for Business Ethics was founded to be an intellectual resource for the application of business ethics in both academic and business contexts. The Center, a result of a private alumni gift of $1 million, integrates ethics into the Haub School’s teaching and research agendas. It carries out this mission through various programs including a speaker series, faculty workshops, a biennial conference, student retreats, and immersion experiences, as well as an annual national survey.
Wall Street Trading Room
The Haub School is pleased to have one of the area's only Wall Street Trading Rooms in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Trading Room contains a Ticker Board, Picture Wall and Data Wall, and 35 computers with 15” dual flat screens. Two 40” LCD panels display live data, ticker and cable feeds. Comprehensive financial data and analytics are provided through subscriptions to Reuters StockVal, Thomson’s Baseline, Tradestation and Morningstar’s Principia. Real-Time ticker data from the major exchanges (NYSE, NASDAQ) is provided through Rise Financial Wire. A Bloomberg Professional terminal is also available, providing students’ access to the global standard for business information.
The Wall Street Trading Room is used by students taking courses in Student Managed Investments, Investments, Portfolio Analysis, Financial Statement Analysis, and Information Systems. A student Portfolio "The Hawk Fund" is managed by the students in Student Managed Investments and volunteers using the research capabilities in the Trading Room. The Hawk Fund portfolio rate of return is published monthly at http://www.sju.edu/hsb/wstr/pages/funds.html.
