Topic: Spotlight on RefWorks
Presenter: Drexel Library Staff
Location: Large Lapsley Room
Come spend some time with the librarians from the Francis A. Drexel Library to learn about the online research management, writing, and collaboration tool, RefWorks. It might just be the software that you and your students are searching for to help eliminate some of the tiresome tasks involved with collecting resources and creating a bibliography for a paper or presentation.
Topic: Student Advising Using Blackboard
Presenter: Amy Lipton, Ph.D.
Location: Large Maguire Room
This session will present The Blackboard Advisng Tool, which has a number of practical features for academic advisors. The advising tool appears on BlackBoard like other classes being taught by faculty members, and allows advisors to post pertinent information for advisees about seminars, workshops, and job fairs. There is an Appointment Book function which allows students to sign up or meetings with their advisors. The assignment function can help students prepare for advising meetings by completing a typcial course sequence worksheet and uploading it prior to their pre-registration meeting with their advisor. Students can also easily access curriculum equirements and special programs, and information on choosing a major. This presentation will be a practical demonstration of the BlackBoard Advising tool, giving academic advisors a chance to learn how the Advising tool can make their advising more effective.
Topic: "Clickers" Let Professors See Who's Really Learning a Lesson
Presenter: Enrico Capitan
Location: Small Lapsley Room
Clicker technology provides you, the professor, with the means to get instant feedback and assess your students. With clicker in hand, all your students can answer a question simultaneously and anonymously. Shyness is no longer a hindrance when answering questions. The device keeps the whole class engaged and you will immediately know if your class really understands a concept you just taught.
Topic: Blackboard Workshop
Presenter: Al Labonis and David Lees
Location: Small Maguire Room
The workshop is directed to faculty who are new to Blackboard and also for faculty who are already using Bb but who may not be familiar with the latest features that are available.

Topic: "Teaching and Learning 2.0 - Cloud Computing"
Presenter: Chris Penny, Ph.D.
Location: Large Lapsley Room
The move to the cloud is the new computing trend. Dr. Penny will highlight some of the latest web applications and services that are allowing this move to happen. There will be live demonstrations of some of the latest Web 2.0 sites and services including Flock, Twitter, Animoto, Picnik, Netvibes, Diigo, and Flickr. At the end of the session there will be time to collaborate and discuss how cloud computing and Web 2.0 is changing the way we interact, and how we can use these tools to enhance teaching and learning.
Dr. Chris Penny hails from Newcastle, England and primarily teaches educational technology courses at West Chester University. He earned a Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction from Penn State University and in 2007 became an Apple Distinguished Educator. Dr. Penny's efforts in teaching and research have the focus of technology integration into pre-service, K-12 and higher education. At state, national and international conferences Dr. Penny has presented research on the topics of cloud computing, one-to-one laptop initiatives, eMentoring, podcasting, and video production. In his most recent publication Dr. Penny employed qualitative methods to study Faculty Perceptions of electronic Portfolios in a Teacher Education Program.
Topic: Bb communication tools in Teaching Foreign Languages
Presenter: Ulana T. Zmurkewycz
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Presentation time: 12:40 P.M. - 1:00 P.M.
Location: Small Lapsley Room
The use of technology has facilitated the study of language. Teachers and students can use tools such as Audacity, Discussion Board and Wimba to further their knowledge. By using these tools, students' skills advance at a faster pace because of the additional hours of practice that they receive.
Topic: Live Classroom Applications: It's More than Just Meeting!
Presenter: Mr. Raymond Sarnacki
Department of Management
Presentation time: 12:40 P.M.- 1:00 P.M.
Location: Small Maguire Room
Live Classroom is a great tool for holding virtual classroom meetings, but it also has features that can help extend courses held in a traditional classroom setting. Ray Sarnacki will explain how he uses the application sharing and archiving features of Wimba’s Live Classroom software to create short tutorials for students to review on their own as a supplement to his lectures. His presentation will also include a demonstration of two other free screen-casting tools, TipCam and Jing, and the pros and cons of using each.
Topic: Teaching Online – Creating the Digital Classroom
Presenter: Dr. David Lees
Presentation time: 1:10 P.M. - 1:30 P.M.
Information Technology/Department of Education
Location: Small Maguire Room
Moving a face-to-face class online can present some challenges to an instructor. How do I create the same type of experiences for my students online that they had in the classroom? David will demonstrate how he has designed his online courses to try and provide those equivalent experiences for the students. He has used the tools provided in the Blackboard system to accomplish this transition.
Topic: Using Tablet PCs in the Classroom: Have Your Powerpoint and Write On It, Too
Presenters: Drs. Julia Lee, Christina King Smith, John Tudor
Department of Biology
Presentation time: 1:10 P.M. - 1:30 P.M.
Location: Small Lapsley Room
A limitation of Powerpoint in the classroom is that the presentation is static and limited to whatever has been prepared before class. In most classrooms when the projection screen is down, little white/black board space is available on which to draw or write material necessary to supplement what is on the slide. Tablet PC laptop computers solve this problem. These computers are controlled by both the keyboard/mouse and a digital stylus. In the classroom, the instructor can show Powerpoint slides and use the stylus as a pen or highlighter to annotate, draw diagrams, or otherwise enhance the slide. If more writing space is needed, one can quickly switch to white/blackboard mode to get a full blank screen. Tablet PCs therefore combine the utility of Powerpoint shows with the ability to annotate slides and the benefit of a black or whiteboard (without the chalk dust or dried-out markers).
Topic: State of Information Technology Address
Presenters Jeff Bachovchin, Fran DiSanti, David Lees, Joe Petragnani
Information Technology
Presentation Time: 1:40 P.M. - 2:30 P.M.
Location: Large Lapsley Room
The university’s four IT Directors will discuss the projects and upgrades completed over the past year and preview plans for the upcoming year.
