| Over the past several years, Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) has been successfully pursuing the development of joint academic programs with leading Chinese universities and related organizations. As the result of more than 15 years of faculty and administrator involvement with China, our interest in working with this developing country has evolved into a key strategic focus for the university. One cannot ignore the size of the academic market in China, particularly at the graduate level. More importantly, however, is the growing desire on the part of a large number of extremely bright and talented Chinese students to obtain graduate degrees from U.S. universities, which includes having the opportunity to spend part of their time studying in the United States. To make this experience even more rewarding, relevant, and practical for the students, our approach has been to partner with selective Chinese universities and institutions to offer the degrees.
The structure of these joint programs consists of both universities determining the curricula, assigning faculty to teach the courses, admitting students and administering the programs. We specifically design the programs to blend the curricula and unique aspects of each country/culture, thus making the programs truly collaborative. While up to half the courses are taught at the Chinese university by its own faculty, the Saint Joseph’s faculty also teach a few courses at the partner university in China. The Chinese students then come to Philadelphia during a summer to take the remaining portion of their coursework (some faculty from China usually accompany the students). While at Saint Joseph’s, in addition to attending classes, the students interact with U.S. graduate students and visit various organizations/institutions related to their respective fields of study in the NYC-PHIL-DC corridor. They also have the opportunity to experience the diverse cultures of the area firsthand. At the same time, our faculty find their experiences teaching in China extremely exciting, educational, and professionally rewarding. The faculty often establish very strong relationships with the students and their faculty colleagues in China, which have led to a growing number of joint research and business projects. We are very excited about the future expansion of our international alumni base. The Chinese students we are attracting to these joint programs are some of the best and brightest in China. With their graduate degrees they are finding great career opportunities in China that offer tremendous growth for leadership and professional enhancement. As a result, we feel that we are successfully contributing to the positive aspects of educational globalization and personal enrichment (on many levels)--all of which fits perfectly with the missions of SJU and our Chinese partners.
