Middle States Self-Study
The Commission on Higher Education is the unit of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools that accredits degree-granting colleges and universities in the Middle States region. It examines the institution as a whole, rather than specific programs within the institution. The main web site for the Middle States Association is http://www.msache.org. Accreditation is granted after a self-study by the college or university. There are several publications used to guide the self-study process: "Designs for Excellence," "Characteristics of Excellence," and "Student Learning Assessment: Options and Resources."
Saint Joseph's University will be seeking accreditation in 2004 and as such has begun the self-study process. Our self-study will be led by a steering committee of 18 members. These members are drawn from overlapping campus constituencies: 12 faculty, 3 Jesuits, 5 administrators, 1 student and 1 trustee. The members were chosen to reflect the diversity of faculty generations, colleges, and divisions. The Steering Committee is chaired by Dr. John McCall of the Philosophy and Management and Information Systems Departments. The full committee is listed below.
The first step of the self-study process is for the University to create a Self-Study Design. This was completed in the fall of 2003 by the Steering Committee. The full document for our self-study can be found at http://www.sju.edu/admin/middlestates/SelfStudyDesign.html.
Our design calls for the creation of five task forces to investigate various
areas of the institution. The Steering Committee will direct the work of
five Task forces that will be individually charged with assessing our university
performance in light of both particular subsets of the fourteen Middle States
standards for accreditation and Saint Joseph's own core values as identified in
our recent Plan 2000 document. The five Task forces will be:
I. Institutional Mission,
Planning, Resources and Assessment
II. Leadership, Governance and
Administration
III. Admissions and Student Life
IV. Faculty
V. Programs,
Curriculum and Student Assessment
