Where will the Alumni Gala be held? What is the Shield of Loyola Award? The Saint Joseph's University Alumni Association's premier event, the 31st Annual Alumni Gala will be held on Friday, October 14, 2011. During the black-tie gala, SJU will present its most prestigious honor, the Shield of Loyola to a distinguished alumnus or alumna who has had remarkable success in his or her profession, whose life reflects the values of St. Ignatius Loyola, and who has demonstrated unparalleled loyalty to Saint Joseph's University. For the first time in 2011, SJU will also present its the Rev. Joesph S. Hogan, S.J. and Ignatius Awards. Where will the Alumni Gala be held? HYATT AT THE BELLEVUE What is the Shield of Loyola Award? Established in 1981, the Shield of Loyola is Saint Joseph's highest alumni honor. It is awarded annually to a distinguished alumnus or alumna who has had remarkable success in his or her profession, whose life reflects the values of St. Ignatius Loyola, and who has demonstrated unparalleled loyalty to Saint Joseph's University. Established in 1961 and named in honor of the late Rev. Joseph S. Hogan, S.J. '03, the Hogan Award recognizes an individual for "the exemplification of Christian principles and outstanding loyal service to Saint Joseph's University." A dedicated priest, educator, alumnus and friend, Fr. Hogan touched the lives of countless students and alumni during his 38 years on the SJU faculty. A professor of philosophy at the College from 1922-1958, he also spent 15 years as the alumni moderator. Established in 1991, the Ignatius Award recognizes a graduate within the last 20 years who has devoted efforts in the service and promotion of Saint Joseph's University, or has lived a life of "service for others" consistent with the principles of Saint Ignatius Loyola.
