James J. Maguire ’58
October 30, 2009
An exceptional leader and champion for his alma mater, James J. Maguire, Sr., ’58 continues to play a vital role in the development of Saint Joseph’s University. He was the driving force behind the historic acquisition of the former Episcopal Academy property, now known as the James J. Maguire ’58 Campus. In addition, he is a former Vice Chairman of the Saint Joseph’s University’s Board of Trustees and chaired the capital campaign which built the Chapel of St. Joseph – Michael J. Smith, S.J., Memorial in 1992.
Professionally, Mr. Maguire is chairman and founder of Philadelphia Consolidated Holding Corporation, an international corporation with assets in excess of $4 billion. In 1980 Mr. Maguire formed the company and publicly traded under the name, Philadelphia Consolidated Holding Corp., which today owns four subsidiaries – Maguire Insurance Agency, Inc., Philadelphia Insurance Company, Philadelphia Indemnity Insurance Company, its flagship company, and Liberty American Insurance Group.
Mr. Maguire founded Maguire Insurance Agency, Inc. as a sole proprietorship in 1960, only a year-and-a-half after his graduation from Saint Joseph’s University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Relations. Today, collectively and individually, Maguire’s companies are rated A+ (superior) by A.M. Best Company, the principal U.S. rating agency for insurance companies.
A 2004 inductee into SJU’s Erivan K. Haub School of Business Hall of Fame, Mr. Maguire played a key role in the establishment of the School’s Academy of Risk Management and Insurance and presently sits on its Board of Governors.
Mr. Maguire’s generous donation of $10 million — the first eight-figure gift in Saint Joseph's history — made possible the acquisition and development of SJU’s new 38-acre Maguire Campus. He and his wife have subsequently committed an additional $5 million to the project, in the form of a leadership challenge gift, bringing their total commitment to the campaign to a stunning $15 million. In recognition of his professional accomplishments and dedication to his alma mater, he was named the 2009 recipient of Saint Joseph’s highest alumni honor the Shield of Loyola.
