In 2008, the SJU National Alumni Board began a new tradition rooted in the Jesuit tradition of service to others. The goal was to identify one day each year when SJU alumni could come together and serve their local communities no matter where they were in life or where they were in the country. In total, five cities participated last year – Boston, New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago and Philadelphia.
In 2009 there is even more momentum. In addition to having all five “founding cities” return, National Day of Service has merged with the annual student Community Day, which last year had over 400 students participate in Philadelphia, and been renamed National Community Day. The goal in the second year is to make National Community Day a regional event and therefore more convenient for all to participate in a half-day of service. Rather than try to bring as many people as possible to one site in Philadelphia (for example), we plan to increase the number and regionalize the service locations.
