Parmalat was founded in 1961 in Collecchio, Parma. It is the first Italian milk manufacturer and is considered among the largest in the world. Parmalat's manufacturing activity is based in 84 facilities around the world with a total production of 4.5 million liters of milk per day.
Parmalat controls 85 companies (21 of which are in Italy), and employs 13,000 people. In Italy Parmalat's products are distributed in 83,000 point of sales with 1,400 trucks owned by the company. It is absolutely leader in the UHT milk, cream, and besciamella.
In the second half of the 70s Parmalat has already grown considerably, both domestically and internationally, also thank to the famous F1 sponsorships of Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet. With the constitution of "Parmalat Finanziaria Spa," in August 1990, Parmalat shares start being traded on the Milan Stock Exchange.
Today Parmalat is present in several countries among which are Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, Hungary, Russia, USA, Mexico, and China.
The activity in the US is managed by "Parmalat USA," HQ in Moonarchie, NJ. Parmalat has 3 manufacturing plants in the US, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, a participation in a fourth plant in Alabama, and control of 3 additional companies employing more than 600 people.
In 1994 US sales have represented 4% of total sales and they have grown from $4.1 million in 1991 to $80.1 million in 1994. In 1995 sales are expected to be around $175 million.
The objective of "Parmalat USA" is to gain a considerable market share with the UHT milk and to expand its actual distribution into the west.
