Education:
- B.S. (1967), M.S.(1970), and Ph.D. (1977) in Microbiology, University of Kentucky
Professional Expereince:
- Instructor, Department of Biology, Winthrop College, Rock Hill, SC - Assistant Professor (1977-84), Associate Professor (1984 - 89),
Professor (1989- present), and Chair (1994-2002), Department of Biology, Saint Joseph's University, Philadelphia - Visiting Professor (1988-89), Department of Microbiology and
Immunology, Temple University College of Medicine, Philadelphia
Courses Taught:
Research Interests:
The study of the developmental cycle of the bacterium, Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus. The bdellovibrios are obligate preditors of other Gram-negative
bacteria, exhibiting a bi-phasic life cycle characterized by a free living attack phase and an intraperiplasmic growth phase.
Ongoing projects include:
1. Isolation of mutants unable to grow predatiously by utilizing transposon insertion mutagenesis. 2. Characterization of predation-deficient mutants.
3. Isolation and cloning of predation-specific genes. 4. DNA sequence analysis of predation-specific genes. 5. Sequencing and annotating the genome of Bdellovibrio sp. Strain W
(in collaboration with the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center).
