Saint Joseph's University
Environmental Sciences Program
Undergraduate Major
This exciting program provides an interdisciplinary perspective on today's many environmental concerns and prepares students for careers in the ever-growing field of environmental science.
The Program
The strength and uniqueness of the Environmental Sciences Program at Saint Joseph's University is a strong foundation in the natural sciences, which is crucial to an understanding of the scientific concepts that underlie all environmental issues. Majors work through a course of study that will develop an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, then move on to a series of upper-level courses in biological sciences, physical sciences, and environmental policy. By choosing upper division courses in the areas that most interest them, each student will have the ability to design a unique course of study that will prepare him or her for a particular environmentally-related career.
Distinctive Benefits
To enhance classroom learning, students may become involved in undergraduate research with individual faculty members. This work may include work in the University's Biodiversity Laboratory, which houses more than 100 different species, including many that are endangered.
One of the major's key features will be an internship where students gain hands-on experience by working off-campus with organizations or business involved in environmental programs.
Because of the increased social awareness of environmental issues, the Environmental Science major will train students for careers in a growing market. Among the many career directions, graduates will be prepared to enter fields of biological or physical sciences research, conduct environmental impact studies for private industry, or enact governmental or legal environmental policies.
Sample Coursework
The major will require several core courses in the areas of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics, as well as courses in Economics, Politics, Sociology and other areas in the humanities. As students progress through the major, they may select upper-level and elective courses in the areas of Environmental Science that especially interest them. Students may take undergraduate research for course credit. In addition, students will complete an internship in their junior or senior years.
