As we study the different groups of organisms, it might be useful to reflect on the larger picture. You might want to take a look at the "Tree of Life," which allows you to look at what we know about relationships among all kinds of organisms. It's also useful to take a step back and ask, why should we spend our time learning about obscure and specialized creatures? Why should we care about what happens to them? Here's an interesting discussion on the value of biodiversity, pretty much from the point of view of a non-scientist.
