Muslims play significant roles in bioethics as health care professionals, researchers and patients, yet information on Muslim views of bioethics is rare, and what is available can be misleading. In this lecture, Jonathan Brockopp, Ph.D., associate professor of history and religious studies at Penn State, argues that part of the problem stems from a misunderstanding of Islamic law (Sharia) and its role in the relatively new field of Muslim Bioethics. As part of this argument, Brockopp discusses Muslim positions on abortion, brain death criteria, organ transplantation and other issues.
