WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR INTERVIEW

Deciding what to wear to your job, internship or graduate school interviews can be tough.  When you are uncertain about what to wear, a good general guideline is to err on the conservative side: dress professionally, avoiding attire that is revealing or flashy.  Following these tips will help you present your most confident self to the interviewer:

GENERAL TIPS FOR BUSINESS ATTIRE

  • For suits, conservative colors such as dark gray, brown, navy blue, and black look the most professional
  • Socks should match your shoes or pants and should go to mid-calf so that no skin shows when you are seated
  • Shoes and belts should match in color
  • Leather portfolio, with pockets to hold your resumes and a notepad for taking notes, will keep your resumes crisp and add to your professional look
  • Make sure clothes are pressed or ironed, not wrinkled
  • Use only a moderate amount of perfume or cologne

WOMEN

  • Pant or skirt suit
  • Skirts should be around the knee
  • Closed toe shoes with a heel that you can walk in comfortably
  • Pantyhose in a neutral color
  • Clothes should be conservative and not revealing
  • Keep jewelry and makeup on the conservative side

MEN

  • Suit
  • Long-sleeved button down shirt in a conservative color such as white or light blue
  • If your tie has a pattern, it should be conservative (i.e. no pictures)
  • Leather shoes
  • Keep jewelry to a minimum
