Welcome to the College of Arts & Sciences Advising Web Page
Your advisor is your primary and official source of information and advice, as well as the source for your Personal Identification Number (PIN) which you will need for registration. We encourage students to consult with any faculty member or university staff as well.
If you have general questions about academic advising, please contact Fr. James Moore, SJ, or x 1280 or visit the dean's office in 113 Barbelin.
Announcements (Imminent deadlines and dates)
Pre-registration for Summer 2008 and Fall 2008 Courses
Pre-registration begins on Wednesday April 8
Students must have a PIN to pre-register. They obtain the PIN from their academic advisor. Students should contact their advisors sufficiently in advance of their pre-registration date. If necessary, students may go to the department chair or advising coordinator for their PIN.
The following 4 departments have advising coordinators; students in these departments should contact them if they are unable to locate their advisor or for any type of advising problems, including obtaining a PIN.
| Dept/Office | Faculty Name | Tel. # | |
| Biology (SC222) | Dr. Christina King-Smith | x1118 | csmith@sju.edu |
| Education (BL273) | Dr. Virginia Johnson | x1574 | vjohnson@sju.edu |
| Psych (Post 221) | Dr. Phyllis Anastasio | x1807 | panastas@sju.edu |
| Sociology (Post 134) | Dr. Robert Moore | x1684 | rmoore@sju.edu |
Students may request permission to register for a closed course from the chair of the department in which the course is offered. Occasional exceptions are made by the associate dean of the respective college, but students should always consult the department chair first. As a general rule, students should consult their advisors for all pre-registration and related questions.
For advising questions that cannot be resolved by an advisor, department chair, or advising coordinator, CAS students should see Fr. James Moore, S.J. Click here.

Expectations for Faculty Advisors (wording used with permission of St. Olaf's College) Faculty advisers assist the student in fulfilling their responsibilities by:
- Being accessible;
- Empowering advisees to explore and make their own decisions regarding academic, career and lifelong goals;
- Assisting advisees in long-range planning as well as immediate problem-solving;
- Assisting advisees in making choices that will lead to developing a realistic major;
- Providing advice and when appropriate referring advisees to the relevant office or resource person;
- Not guessing in response to an advisee question about policy or requirements and referring advisee to the relevant office or person for an answer;
- Encouraging advisees to change advisers if they no longer have an interest in the adviser's area and/or it is felt that a positive relationship is not developing.
Expectations for Student Advisees (wording used with permission of St. Olaf's College)
The responsibility for understanding and meeting degree requirements rests entirely with the student. To fulfill this responsibility, students should follow the guidelines below:
- Develop plans for achieving academic, career and personal goals;
- Take the initiative to acquire advice and to develop a relationship with a faculty adviser;
- Become familiar with the General Education Requirements and graduation requirements;
- Schedule appointments with assigned faculty adviser when requested and prepare for the meeting;
- Consult with your faculty adviser if making major changes in your semester class schedule or when dropping courses during the semester;
- Keep your advisor informed of any special circumstances or changes in your life that may affect you academically or personally.
The advice of faculty advisers does not constitute a promise or a contract ensuring a student's graduation on schedule, or the completion of specific requirements. The responsibility for understanding and meeting degree requirements rests entirely with the student.
