Pre-Registration

Pre-registration for the Spring semester takes place in November of the preceding Fall semester. Pre-registration for the Fall semester takes place in April of the preceding Spring semester. Seniors register first, followed by juniors, sophomores, and then freshmen. Certain groups of students, such as student athletes and students in the Honors program, receive "priority" registration, which allows them to register immediately before their cohort group. All registration is done online through MySJU; students receive their registration date from the Student Services Center via snailmail.

In advance of pre-registration, students should make an appointment with their advisor to discuss their course selection and to receive their PIN Students should come prepared with a proposed roster, with several alternatives in case the courses they select are closed. Advisors can access their advisees' PIN through MySJU. Go to School Services, Administrative Services and then Faculty Services and then the Advisor menu.

To register for courses, log on to MySJU, go to School Services, then Administrative Services, click on Student Services & Financial Aid, then Registration, and Add/Drop Classes. You will be asked for your pin number. Then add courses by the 5 digit CRN number.

Course Override

Students may obtain permission from the department chair to be signed into a course for a variety of reasons, such as closed course, waiving a pre-requisite. Students should obtain the "authorization to override a course" form and meet with the appropriate department chair. If the department does the course override electronically, the student can register online. If the course override is done with a paper form, the student should take the form (with the chair's signature) to Student Services to be registered there. At times, the permission of the particular course instructor and/or the dean is also required. To download the form, click here.

Drop Add

Students may add or drop a course anytime through the first week of the new semester. The procedure is the same as pre-registration. Students should consult with their advisors about the proposed change. The pre-registration pin number is valid until the first day of class; at that time, a new pin number is required for drop add. Students obtain that new PIN from their advisor. In their first semester, freshmen should go to the Registrar's office to drop/add after consulting with their advisors. In subsequent semesters, freshmen may drop/add online after consulting with their advisors, where they obtain their new PIN. To download the form, click here.

Evening classes

Generally, students may register for any CAS course in the Course Offerings booklet. Special permission is required for  UniversityCollege  courses and for HSB evening courses.

Day students who wish to register for UC evening classes must obtain permission from the chair of the department in which the UC course is offered.  A  dean's signature is not required.  Juniors and seniors may take a maximum  of 2 UC courses per year.  Sophomores are generally discouraged from  taking UC courses, although exceptions can be made at the discretion of  the appropriate department chair.  Freshmen may not take UC courses.  Day  student enrollment in UC courses is limited to 20% of the class; some day  students who wish to take a specific UC class may be unable to enroll if  the 20% capacity has already been reached.

Day students in CAS who wish to take evening classes in HSB need special permission from department chairs or the Associate Dean of HSB, depending  on the department. See Mr. Joseph Ragan for Accounting classes, Dr.  Karen Hogan for Finance classes, and Mr. Patrick O'Brien for all other classes.

Sixth course

Although the usual load is five courses, students with superior records may petition the Dean of the appropriate college for permission to carry a sixth course. (See Incidental Fees.) No student may carry more than six courses in any semester. Additional tuition is charged for this overload.

Withdrawal from a course

After the drop/add period, you may withdraw from a course. Your transcript will reflect this with a "W." At this point in the semester, you may not add another course; you must make up this course either during the summer or as a sixth course. See the Associate Dean for permission for a sixth or summer course. The final date for withdrawal is usually in the ninth week of class. (Check Academic calendar for exact date here) The form must be signed by your advisor (two weeks after the end of the quarter the instructor's signature is required instead) and then the Associate Dean. To download the form, click here.

Summer Courses

Degree credit is granted for courses taken in summer sessions only when the student has secured in advance written permission from the appropriate Dean. Summer school courses that are a part of the GER or major course requirements must be taken at Saint Joseph's University unless the course is not being offered that summer and is necessary for a student to maintain normal academic progress or the proper sequence of courses in his or her major field of study. Such courses, as well as elective courses, must be taken at a fouryear college. Permission from the appropriate Dean to register for summer courses at Saint Joseph's or at other institutions is ordinarily sought during the pre-registration period of the spring semester.

The approved uses of summer session courses for matriculated students are as follows:
  • to make up academic deficiencies, i.e., courses failed or not completed during a regular semester;
  • to make up course deficits, i.e., additional courses needed as result of change of major, or, in some instances, transfer;
  • to enrich the student's educational program; or
  • to reduce the student's course load in an ensuing semester.
Permission to register for summer courses does not constitute permission to accelerate a degree program. For all students registered in our day colleges, the maximum number of courses allowed for any one summer will normally be two. For exceptional reasons, the Dean may grant permission for a third course. Registration and payment for summer courses are governed by the regulations and procedures of the summer sessions.

Intersession Courses
University College offers courses for two weeks during Intersession between the New Year and the start of the Spring semester. These courses are open to day students with the following provisions:

  1. An intersession course may count as an elective for any student (with the exception of freshmen) with his or her advisor's signature.
  2. Intersession courses are open to all students (with the exception of day freshmen) , day or evening, for credit in the major only with the chair's signature.
  3. In order for an intersession course to count as a GER, it must specifically approved on an annual basis by the GER committee.
  4. To date, there have been no GER courses for day students submitted for approval for the Intersession. Accordingly, no intersession course may count for the GER for day students for Intersession 2008.
  5. Day students in the College of Arts and Sciences are normally restricted to four courses in University College for their undergraduate degree and first year students are normally not eligible for such courses.
  6. Under no circumstances is a dean's signature required.
  7. Restrictions on the percentage of day students in University College courses do not apply to intersession courses.
Students wishing to sign up for an intersession course may pick up a form at University College (Barbelin 117) or access it on line at http://www.sju.edu/uc/pages/intersession08schedule.htm

Final Exams

Final exams are given in all courses during the week immediately following the last day of classes. Exam schedules are available approximately at the time of pre-registration. Students may pick up hard copies of the exam schedule at Student Services; they are not mailed to the students. Students are encouraged to resolve any conflicts (defined as two exams at the same time or three exams in one day) as far in advance as possible. In the event that there is a conflict between a CAS and HSB final exam, faculty members in CAS are required to make adjustments in the Fall semester and HSB faculty are required to make adjustments in the Spring semester. The 2:00-4:00 PM time on the last day of exams is designated as a "conflict period."
