Description of the Chair
The Jesuit Chair in the College of Arts and Sciences is named in honor of Donald I. MacLean, S.J., former president of Saint Joseph's. Members of the Society of Jesus who are accomplished teachers and scholars in the arts and sciences are eligible to apply for the position. The establishment of this chair is meant to emphasize that the University's Jesuit identity is inseparable from the finest teaching, scholarship, and collegial discourse.
Current Chair Holder
Fr. Amedeus Shirima, S.J., is the Donald I. MacLean, S.J. Chair holder for the Spring 2008 semester in the Department of Philosophy. He is teaching “African Philosophy.”
Father Shirima was born in Tanzania. He earned his B. Ph. at Saint Peter Canisius Institute, which is affiliated with the Gregorian Pontifical University, his B. Th. at Hekima College, Nairobi, M. Th. At Heythrop College, University of London, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at Loyola University, Chicago.
He served as Lecturer and Rector at Arrupe College in Harare, Zimbabwe, where he specialized in Ethics and Political and Legal Philosophy. He is the author of numerous articles, including “Economic and Political Justice in Africa: The African Church and Economic Dependence.” He is a Board member of Stya Nilayan: Cennai Journal of Intercultural Philosophy.
Father Shirima will deliver his public lecture, "An African Perspective on Aristotelian-Thomistic Ethics: Response to Contemporary Moral Crises” on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at 3:00 PM in the Haub Executive Center.
