Undergraduate and graduate education students seeking certification in elementary or secondary education must complete a sequence of three labs prior to conducting a full-time, fourteen week student/intern teaching experience. Each lab is embedded in a specific course at Saint Joseph’s University.
Students seeking dual certification in elementary and special education must complete two additional labs, Special Ed Lab I and II. Special Ed Lab I is completed prior to student teaching and Special Ed Lab II is completed during the student teaching semester. The lab is embedded in the professional seminar and student teaching experience, but requires additional practical and reflective activities.

With the exception of students already teaching in schools, lab and student teaching placements are provided by the Office of Student Teaching and Field Experiences. The office works with area schools to obtain these placements.
Students planning to conduct student/intern teaching in the Fall Semester should submit a completed application to the Office of Student Teaching and Field Experiences by the previous December 15th.
Students planning to conduct student/intern teaching in the Spring Semester should submit a completed application to the Office of Student Teaching and Field Experiences by the previous April 15th.
In order to participate in student/intern teaching or lab experiences, students must obtain the following clearances:
- Pennsylvania State Criminal History Record (Act 34)
- Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 51)
- Federal FBI Criminal History Report
- Proof of Tuberculin Skin Test
