Writing Through Race, Class and Gender - China

Course includes a one month service-learning experience in China.
Students will converse in English with Chinese people while exploring different aspects of Chinese literature and culture.
English 2695:301-SLR course content will include some key texts from Chinese literature, travel writing by U.S. citizens traveling to China, films on China, and nonfiction that depicts different perspectives on Chinese lives.
To facilitate the service-learning portion of the course, students will study some of the key texts in teaching English to speakers of other languages.
Students will write a regular journal and keep field notes while they are in China, complete a short paper before they go to China based on readings and preparation, and submit a longer paper upon return.
Course and immersion in China will begin in late May after graduation. Tentative dates are May 23 through June 21, 2008.
