Le Cercle Français

Le Cercle Français welcomes all members of the Saint Joseph’s University community interested in the cultures of French-speaking countries. Each semester, the Cercle organizes a variety of activities, such as:

La Table Française, which offers the opportunity to speak French in a casual setting while enjoying good food. No matter what your level—from beginner to advanced—the Table Française is a great place to practice conversation on all sorts of topics.

Table Française

Film viewings, both on-campus and in area theaters. Some of the films are classics; others are recent releases from France, Canada, and other Francophone countries.

Grammar sessions, where students from all levels of French can stop by and get a professor’s help with grammar questions.

Dinners in Philadelphia restaurants. In recent years, members of the Cercle have visited la Crêperie Café and the Crêperie Beau Monde.

Beau Monde

Trips to the theater to see plays like Around the World in Eighty Days and The Imaginary Invalid.

Trips to area museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art (which offers guided tours in French, has a beautiful collection of Impressionist art, and organizes exhibitions of works of French artists) and the Rodin Museum (the largest collection of Rodin’s sculptures outside of Paris)

Trips to off-campus talks, for instance presentations on Benjamin Franklin’s time in Paris or Henri Matisse.

The best ideas for events and excursions come from the Cercle’s members, and each year’s activities reflect the interests of participants. We’d love to have you join us!
