New Course Description: ENG 1211 Cultural Diversity: Telling Stories
This course looks at various kinds of stories: autobiography, fiction, film, ethnology, and interview, and considers how we tell stories, who speaks and who listens. An important component of this relationship-based service-learning where stories are told, gathered, and heard from people at the service-learning site. We'll particularly consider how gender, class, poverty, education, and violence influence the kinds of stories that are told, and we'll study ways of making ourselves better listeners and more receptive audiences for stories that aren't really the ones we want to hear. We will write our own stories as well as other people's, and think about what makes a good story.
Requirements for a Minor in Gender Studies: Students seeking a minor in Gender Studies are required to select and complete six courses from the program’s listings, with no more than two in any one academic discipline. GEN 2901: Seminar in Feminist Theories must be one of these six courses. Students are encouraged but not required to take GEN 2971: Selected Topics in Gender Studies (an independent study done under the supervision of a member of the Gender Studies Committee) as one of these six courses.
