These requirements are also laid out in grid form in the checklist of required courses toward the bottom of this page. Faculty advisors use this checklist to monitor a student's progress. Students should also keep an updated copy for their own use. Students will also follow the recommended sequence of courses set forth in the list at the end of this web page.
GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
GER Common Courses (See Curricula): six courses
GER University Distribution (See Curricula): fourteen courses, including Social/Behavioral Science:
POL 1011 Introduction to American Government and Politics
POL 1031 Introduction to Comparative Politics, or POL 1051 Introduction to International Politics
GER Electives: any eight courses
MAJOR REQUIREMENTS
Besides HIS 1011-1021 and HIS 1031-1041, a history major will be required to complete at least:
ONE upper-division course in American history
ONE upper-division course in European history
ONE course in either Latin American or Asian history
TWO seminars/colloquia (2800 level) in any area offered, one in the junior year and one in the senior year.
FIVE additional history electives.
Two courses at the 1500-2000 level must be before 1800. The appropriate courses are:

The seminars/colloquia will also count to satisfy the above area or time requirements for 1500-2000 courses. Credit will be given for advanced placement and for appropriate SJU Honors courses or courses taken in foreign programs. History majors with credit transferred from other institutions must complete at least four courses taught by history faculty of Saint Joseph's University. Students who undertake a double major that includes history must consult the chair or department advisor for assistance in scheduling history courses.
REQUIREMENTS FOR HISTORY MINORS
The minor in history requires completion of HIS 1011-1021 and any four courses numbered HIS 1500 or higher.
