Department of Physics

Welcome to the Saint Joseph's University Department of Physics

We offer a rigorous Bachelor of Science program in classical and contemporary physics, and a minor program that give a fundamental focus to any technical major. As a physics major, you can explore the boundaries between the traditional disciplines by minoring in one of the other sciences, take a double major with computer science, build a pre-med program, or minor in education to earn Pennsylvania teaching certification. All this happens in a liberal arts environment that makes sure you have a well-rounded education both in and outside the natural sciences, and prepares you to make a significant contribution in whatever field you choose to enter.

Many of our graduates – over 600 in the past fifty years – have gone on to outstanding careers as researchers in all the major areas of modern physics, as teachers at all levels, as leaders of world-class research and development organizations in industry and government. Some have used their physics degree as a springboard into other areas such as medicine and law. Those who choose to go on to graduate school are typically
admitted to excellent programs; recent graduates have gone to Penn, Delaware, and Columbia.
We encourage our students to be involved in research. There are opportunities to participate in the faculty members’ ongoing research projects, and there is funding for a number of students to pursue (paid) research over the summer. Several of our students, especially in the summer after the junior year, participate in summer research programs at other institutions; recently we have had students doing research at the
National Institute for Standards and Technology, Roswell Park Cancer Center, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron.

You can find us on the third floor of the Science Center. The department office is in room 333 (and our computer lab, room 315B, belongs to the physics majors!). To learn more, contact the Department Chair, Dr. Paul Angiolillo, by phone at (610) 660-1813, by fax at (610) 660-1982, by e-mail at pangioli@sju.edu, or by paper mail at Department of Physics, Saint Joseph's University, 5600 City Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19131.
