Study Abroad in Chile
Exchange Program with the Universidad Alberto Hurtado
Santiago, Chile
Located in Santiago, Chile, the Universidad Alberto Hurtado (UAH) is a member of the Jesuit network of more than 200 institutions of higher education, present today in 65 countries. The longstanding educational tradition of this network has significantly contributed to the formation of people and cultures by means of a permanent search of academic excellence, the duty of service and sense of responsibility towards the local and global surroundings.
Another important aspect of this program is the course "Approaches to Poverty and Development". The course includes a social project during the entire semester. The course counts for double credits. Please visit the UAH website to learn more about their International Program.
Depending on language ability, students may enroll in UAH courses directly and take classes with Chilean and other international students; or, students may take specially designed classes for study abroad students. A high level of Spanish is expected as all courses are taught in Spanish. This program is best suited for humanities majors or those interested in Latin American studies and language acquisition. In addition to the Poverty course (mentioned above) students generally enroll in another 2-3 courses during the semester. Students must have flexibility in course selection since registration takes place after arrival in Chile.
The academic calendar is quite different from a semester at Saint Joseph's University. The Spring semester typically runs from February to June and the Fall semester runs July to November. Before the regular semester begins at UAH international students may enroll in an optional 3 week intensive Spanish course (highly recommended), which begins in January or in July.
This is a newly approved program and students will be responsible for gaining approval from Department Chairs for all of the courses taken abroad. Students will be expected to complete the SJU Study Abroad Course Approval Form before leaving for Chile.
Students are housed with carefully selected local families for the duration of the program. For those students not interested in the homestay experience, it may be possible to be placed in a student dormitory.

Students will be responsible for all non-tuition fees associated with this program. There is an additional charge for room and board. To request a copy of the Financial Information Sheet which outlines additional estimated costs for this program, please send an email request to: cip@sju.edu
