Study Abroad in Chile
School for International Training (SIT)
Chile: Economic Development Program
The School for International Training (SIT) offers a variety of field-based study abroad options for students. At this time their program in Chile on Economic Development is the only one on our approved list of programs.
"This program examines the political and social bases for Chile's export-oriented economy, including alternative responses to economic change. Your interdisciplinary seminar in the capital city of Santiago is complemented by field excursions to sites of local industry, forestry, mining and nontraditional agricultural export production. Opportunities to meet with union activists, policy analysts, government officials and community organizers further advance your understanding of the social, political and environmental impact of Chile's economic system."
Please visit SIT's website for more information on this program.
The curriculum model for this program is quite unique. All students are required to take the courses offered by SIT that semester. Students have flexibility to explore a topic of interest in greater depth with the independent study project. Please refer to SIT's Coursework/Components sheet for a complete explanation of courses offered.
Since students can only take 4 courses on this program, students are able to use the SJU 4 Course Policy. This policy allows students to either 1) have a free elective waived or 2) take an overload and not be charged for it. For a full explanation of the 4 course policy please click here.
The academic calendar is similar to that at Saint Joseph's University. This is a newly approved program and students will be responsible for gaining approval from Department Chairs for all of the courses taken abroad. Students will be expected to complete the SJU Study Abroad Course Approval Form before leaving for Chile.
Students are housed with local families for part of the program; for the remainder of the program students stay in small hotels or hostels.
- GPA Requirement: 2.5
- Previous college-level coursework in economics, political economy and/or development studies
- Three recent semesters of college-level Spanish or equivalent and the ability to follow coursework in Spanish
- Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing
- Students should have junior or high sophomore status
Students will remain registered at SJU and pay SJU tuition for the semester or year they will be studying abroad plus a Continuing Registration Fee of $100. Tuition rates are assessed to a student based on the student's primary matriculation at Saint Joseph's University as determined by the academic policies of the University.
Saint Joseph's University will then pay SIT for the tuition portion only of the program fee. Students will be responsible for all non-tuition fees associated with this program. There is an additional charge for room and board.
